I also laughed at your second sentence. I never said an SSD is 2-3 sec faster in general, I said Word starting 2-3 sec faster.

She has a BF who posts on OCN, the chances for him removing all the unecessary software are quite big. Chances are she will also have a ton of music and pictures like most girl. Should she buy an external HDD, so she can carry that AND the laptop? By your logic she should also install the SSD by herself, which is no easy task on some models.

A normal HDD is fine.

Pictures? There is something called picasa, photobucket, facebook, etc

Music? There is something called pandora, youtube, etc. Also at this day and age, she must have atleast an ipod or music player from a phone.

If she would use netflix, then she has access to internet

Even if you uninstall the unecessary programs that she install, hard drive suffers fragmentation which hurts performance badly overtime and defragging takes ages especially on laptop hard drive

I think you're greatly exaggerating how "bad" laptop HDDs are, but please continue.

And obviously no one keeps whole albums of pictures and music on their computer anymore, thanks for letting me know.

I'll let the OP decide for himself.

I've seen SSDs both reduce battery life and improve, and even if it does improve it's nothing close to 3-4 hours. I also suggest you read this: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...tery,1955.html

Step 1: Calm down.

Step 2: Accept the fact that the term "SSD" does not denote requiring a power hungry high throughput model with performance controllers.

Update: We apologize for a procedural mistake in testing battery runtime for this article. As the benchmark looped, the total workload processed by the fast Flash SSDs was higher, causing other components, such as the chipset and the CPU, to be more active as well. We followed up with the article Flash SSD Update: More Results, More Answers, which proves our conclusion correct, despite the procedural mistake. Most of the Flash SSDs are not there yet. However, OCZ’s SATA-II Flash SSD proves that the technology has the potential to leave hard drives in the dust.

If you gonna put a link, make sure it is reliable.

Also getting a link from 2008 where most ssd are crap. Are you really that desperate?

Did you just point out a fault in a synthetic benchmark for us?

You can also set the SDD to be turned off by windows after a minute ( or shorter if you know what your doing ). because once you request data from the SSD, it doesn't take 30 seconds to spin up.

At least I don't insult people.

I never claimed the link was valid, I simply suggested that you read it, your point is?

You seem to have convinced yourself that SSDs are a must in laptops, which is untrue.

1. More expensive than normal HDDs.
2. Less storage.
3. Prone to problems such as driver issues and general malfunctions.
4. Doesn't make you write faster in Word.
5. Doesn't make your Netflix video run smoother.
6. Doesn't improve your grades.

Faster startup WOOP, WOOP, big deal. With proper optimization normal HDD startups are more than adequate for the average user.
The sad truth is that most people couldn't care less about SSDs when it means less storage at high cost. Sure, things goes faster, but it's not like HDDs are that slow.

Big waste of money for students that just wants a working laptop. HDDs offers far better value in that department.

100% agree with Stefy.

But really, they clearly stated a very very tight budget, arguing about an SSD being crucial for her is just absurd.

Yeah, they run cooler, quieter and are more power efficient. But it's going to be used by a "casual user" who doesn't need it. The price to usefulness ratio just isn't there.

Random note: You're approach to this whole discussion, Raclim, has been pretty disgusting.

Good luck, OP.

Im starting to think what your true "intentions" really are

We have 4 laptop 1 has wd black bekt 7200, 1 seagate 5400, 2 hitachi 7200rpm drive

I previously used wd on asus g71 as boot and storage coupled w/ perfecdisk

I add an ssd to use as a boot since it accept 2 drive and the difference is massive

You get what you pay for, its better than spending on something that makes a difference not like other people who would spend $200 + on a motherboard that doesn't have any real impact just to say

"OMG, MY MOTHERBOARD HAS MORE USB THAN YOURS!!!"

Do you actually own a laptop w/ a 5400rpm drive or just stating your "imagination"?

Good day to you sir, and keep convincing people to buy SSDs even when it's not needed.
