Gaming Headset recommendations

Thread Starter
Today, I had a terrible tragedy happen to me. My Siberia's, after almost five years of owning them, died on me today. I am sad. So very, very sad.

In light of which, it makes my compulsive side happy and I finally get to buy new headsets! applaud.gif

I don't know much about gaming headsets, back in the day I would usually type in "Top Gaming Headset" and buy whatever first popped up. Now I'm smarter. And slightly poorer than I should be.

Does anyone have any personal recommendations of great headsets?

I've been looking at a few, namely SteelSeries Siberia V2, Razer Megalodons, Sennheiser PC161, and Logitech G390

I'm not too sure on how good quality they all so maybe y'all can help me. I'm looking for the best audio quality. Like on a scale of 1 to 10, between 8 and 9. The mic should be good and not unwieldly, and USB connection. Wireless is always a bonus and would probably win out over an equivalent. And also, all this for less than $150 biggrin.gif

If anyone has any other suggestions for me to look at other than the four I listed, that'd be great

I have the white ones and found them for 60$ one of my favorite purchases EVER. The only thing i dont like is i wish the mic was more flexible but that is a minor gripe. For the price these things are great

I tried the Siberia V2s. On a scale from 1-10 I'd rate them about a 2.5. The USB part of it was garbage, but then every USB headset is.Its insanely loud too. I don't know what they were thinking, but you could probably drive full size speakers with it. For under $150 with a mic off the top of my head I'd recommend Sennheiser PC 360s. Sennheiser likes to retail them for insane amounts but you can pick them up under $150. Check the For Sale section here.

I'd also completely ignore the Megalodons for reasons I'll make clear. Also ignore the G390s as well for similar reasons.

But rather than tell you which headphones are good and which are not, I'll give you a few simple explanations so you can judge for yourself.

1. USB headsets are (almost) universally garbage. Its not because they are USB, but because you're paying for a sound card as well as your headphones, and the sound card you get with most USB headsets isn't really any better than your onboard sound. That's just extra money you could be spending on better drivers. For that reason a $150 USB headset is without exception worse than a $150 3.5mm headset.

2. 5.1/7.1 surround speakers are a scam. Surround sound only works when the speakers are placed far enough away for your ears to detect the direction. Having 5 drivers pressed up against your ears does nothing for surround. You can get the same effect from two speakers. (See: Binaural Recording) And as with USB you're paying extra for nothing. 1 high quality driver will sound better than 5 mediocre ones, and will cost about the same.

3. Wireless is terrible for three reasons: 1. The RF headphones essentially give you radio quality sound, and are easily subject to interference. 2. Bluetooth/Wireless headphones run through USB, so you're essentially packing the sound card on your head. 3. Power output is limited to what the battery can sustain.

Keeping those in mind you can see why the Siberia V2s are bad (USB, although 3.5mm connection isn't any better), why the Megalodons are bad (USB and "7.1" surround), and why the G930s are just plain awful (USB "surround" and wireless)

All that leaves is the PC 161, and with a budget of $150 you can do much, much better.

Although I would recommend you just get a normal pair of headphones with a clip on mic. I have yet to use a headset that sounds good(although I have yet to try the PC 360s, which I assume will sound a bit better than the mediocre PC 350s). The only one I even remotely liked was the Razer Carcharias, which is probably the best headset under $80 you can just walk into a store like Bestbuy and find.

OK. I was in your situation b4, I was gonna buy corsair hs1 but I did little bit of research about gaming headset here in ocn. They don't recommend gaming headset or 5.1 surround headphones because it's only gimmick just to sell their product. These two headphones are most recommended her in ocn "sennheiser 555 or ad700 which costs less than 100$ and just get zalman mic for 10$. And optional
Sound card -Asus xonar dg. That is what i call gaming headphone.

I have to agree with tiramoko.

I seriously believe that the whole "gaming headphone" market is a scam. I personally went out and bought some highly acclaimed ATH-50s after my Siberia broke and I can't imagine going back. Having studio quality headphones completely changes the way you listen to music. I happened to buy the same mic as tiramoko and am completely satisfied!

Hm. Brings a whole new perspective on the entire thing. Another thing is I play games from my couch, and my computer is a bit away from me. About 5 feet from the front ports, 7 feet from the back ports. Would headset/headphones come with adequate length of cord?

Most of the higher quality ones come with long cords, usually around 3m (9.8 feet)

The shortest I have are my Grado SR80s, which are 7 feet (2m), longest being my ATH M35s at a whopping 11 feet.

I'm getting some Ad 700's heard they have an incredible sound stage. Also, that is the second time I've heard of the Xonar Dg. It's fairly cheap. But how is the performance?

Ah, so the Xonar dg would be better with headphones? How's speaker quality?

Congrats on the purchases. I am looking into getting those as well sometime. Hopefully soon. Though I don't know if I should wait till Black Friday.
