Power for 955Be and OC'd 6870

Thread Starter
Not sure if this is the right area for this, but I've got a question that may be related to my Power Supply.

Before I begin, let me assure you that I am completely new to any form of overclocking.

I recently placed a Phenom x4 II 955be in my machine along with a radeon 6870. I also installed the hyper 212 cooler from coolermaster. While running Dirt 3, which was running at 60-70 FPS on my old processor (x4 9600BE), it will black out before the main menu. This also leads to my computer not responding. However, if I take off the overclock on my 6870 the game will run fine. Could this be that it is pulling too much power from my 500W power supply, or will this just be an unstable Overclock?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I think it may be more of a unstable GPU overclock and catalyst drivers are crashing?

only a 500w for that rig is cutting it way too close

What brand 500w? 500w is fine, but not if its a junky one.

And have you tried everything stock?

Would moving up to a 600 be worth it? Or would a 650/700w be better?

I had just recently purchased a 500 watt when I bought the GPUthinking I would be safe, but I didn't realize I would end up buying a new Processor as well. Now, of course since I have a new processor, I am considering OC'ing the Processor as I know it has potential for up to 4.5 GHz.

@Pewpewlazer:

It's a CoolerMaster eXtreme Power Plus.

As far as stock speeds or stock CPU fans and such?
Speaking Stock speeds and no OC, yes. It works fine with no OC on the processor or GPU.

Is it a GPU overclock causing the issue? Did you get the exact same overclock stable with your old CPU?

Seems like it could be. I haven't tried it with JUST the processor overclocked yet. With both the CPU and GPU at stock it runs fine at about 50-70 FPS. (Same as old set up)

If I OC my GPU at all, the game won't start and will lock up my PC.

That PSU is fine for your needs assuming that it's a functional unit.
You could run a 580 on that if you really wanted to.

The problem is somewhere else.

Would running a stability test like Prime help me determine this, or would the problem just be somewhere else?

Prime helps with CPU and ram, but not so much with GPU, nonetheless, give it a try for a few hours just to make sure theres not trouble with the new CPU.
