Help with choosing a cpu

Thread Starter
I kinda have the idea on building a computer but just need some helpful hints/info for the cpu.

I want to get a AMD cpu but i don't know what one to get the AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6GHz Quad-Core or the AMD FX-6100 Zambezi 3.3GHz Six-Core.

1. Like whats the difference between a Quad-Core and the Six-Core?
2. Should i spend the extra $60 for the long run or stick with the quad-core?
3. Why is the six-core slower then the quad-core or does the extra two cores make up for it?

sorry if its dumb questions

1. 6 is bigger than 4, more cores the better
2. Actually I would recommend getting a Phenom II X4 955 which is faster than any of them; I have a hard time recommending any one of these processors for the price they ask.
3. Yes, the extra 2 cores should make the hex core faster, although they aren't exactly 6 cores nor 4 cores in the common sense; they are branded as such, but tests show for each one core, the second (its pair) is only 70% the speed or less - so an FX Quad would have 2 cores at full speed and another 2 slow cores @less than 70%speed; As such I would say the FX 6 core is comparable with an x4 Phenom II that doesn't have this "pairing" or processor cores.

No such thing as a dumb question. Its only dumb if you dont ask!

We really need to know:
1. what the machine is going to be used for
2. what your budget is
3. if you have any existing hardware

Those are dual, and tri core CPU's. If you want a quad core FX CPU, you'll have to get the FX-8120, or 8150.

Please dont start this......he didnt ask if they were "real cores", or your opinion on the architecture.

Before we proceed anywhere, we need to hear back regarding his goals for the rig.

haha, ok, ok. It just sounded like he was drinking the AMD marketing koolaid. I won't troll though, I don't need to start a flame war. Forget my post, and carry on.
