OCZ Solid 3 SSD- good deal?

Hi there,

I'm in the market for an SSD and I'm on a budget. I want to get one for a boot drive and to put my games on to load faster. This SSD is on sale for $115 on NCIX:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227729

1.) It is listed on newegg under "laptop accessories." I heard it doesn't matter, will it still work on a desktop?
2.) I heard the speed isn't as fast as other SSD's on the market, but the normal price is in the same range as other 128gb SSD's.
3.) Other OCZ products like the Vertex 3 have frequent BSOD issues and the reviews aren't that good, can that be said for all OCZ products like this one?

I originally wanted to get the Crucial M4 but it is too expensive for me. Unless it goes on sale soon I might have to get this one. What do you guys think?

1) Yes it will work in a desktop, though you might have to buy a 2.5" to 3.5" drive adapter, unless the drive comes with one.

2) The speeds on new SandForce SF-2281 are very fast. Faster than the older SF-1222 controller...and that controller delivers some stunning performance.

3) I think the Solid 3 was one of the drives that was affected by the BSOD bug, but I don't know what the incidence of the problem was. Supposedly new firmware has fixed it, but some of my more knowledgeable OC.net peeps are going to have to chime in.

Thanks! I'm baffled by how I can get a newer SSD for such a low price, but I think that's also the fact the brand has a bad reputation with their SSD's. If I need to replace, do they have a good warranty? I heard OCZ warranty is terrible, anyone wanna chime in? Basically this seems like the only OCZ SSD that people aren't complaining about that much, I hope this is a good choice in a SSD!

The price is because it's the low end SF2281 drive from OCZ. They use the cheapest nand they can get to build it. Plus the bsod bug does effect this drive as well. The newest firmware, 2.15, seems to be sorting it out for most people.

However, in my opinion only, this drive is not worth buying. The 500/450 numbers advertised are with Atto using 100% compressible data. Most data is already compressed to some point so those numbers mean nothing.

The 4k read and write on this drive are also low. 4k is your real world numbers for how fast a drive is.

I'd rather buy a 64gb M4 or a 60gb Vertex 3 for the boot drive and put your games on a second hdd. This way, your OS is nice and fast. The only gain you get in games is loading time and this drive, while faster, won't give you a boost in games like the other two drives would give you running the OS.

Or better yet, keep saving up for one of the other two drives in 120-128gb form.
