Recommend Me an Intel Chip!

Thread Starter
Hi guys I'm sorry if this thread is like the 1000th+ thread you seen about recommendations but for the longest time I've been using AMD, since I was a child! Loved the socket A type lol.

But yes I'm thinking about transitioning over to Intel since I've been using AMD like forever and from all the people especially my older brother, he's always talking about Intel having faster and better chips. I'm not sure if it's true or not since we've never owned a Intel. But I hope you guys can back him up and lead me into the Intel direction!

Here's what I know so far, A lot of the members here use the Sandybridge and usually get stable speeds of 4.0-5.0ghz! I know nothing of Intel but to me it sells just as good as the old AMD Phenom II X4 965 c3. I have the C2 so I can't get past 3.7ghz without it phasing out. That's why I'm upgrading.

I want to know if this would be the best investment because I'm a gamer and I often multitask. I was looking into the bulldozer but it's still new and the 3.6ghz one won't be coming out for a bit. So I was looking into the AMD 1090T/1100T but I want more opinions before I buy anything and then regret it.

Also, i5 or i7? (2500k, 2600k) Should I even look at 2700k?

I7 will be your best bet in the long run especially for gaming and multitasking. Just be sure to get top end Video cards and Ram to go along with it to get the most out of it.

As far as an upgrade goes. anything I5+ will surpass anything AMD has.
the i5 2500k is now the best bang for buck.. i agree on this people saying fx8150 is really fail. more power consumption less performance and price is higher than 2500k and can't even compete 2500k's performance even if it is OC'd at 4.7 it cant even beat i5 2500k and i7 2600k at stock and doubles the power consumption while OC'd.

i just got my i7 2600k last week, and i love it, came from a 4.0 1090t, after being a big amd fanboy, due to money reasons i am still utterly shocked at how fast the stock 2600k is IMO worth the money,

IMO2 the 2700k isnt worth the money, because its the same physical chip as the 2600k, they just "pick the best of them" and clock them 100mhz faster, and charge you for that.

Okay, I've decided on getting my first Intel chip!

Now the only problem is getting the motherboard and Ram for it. I think it'll total up to ~$600 for the three combined :x

Also +rep!

I'm not sure why they're suggesting the 2600k/2700k. I didn't see you mention anything about video editing so I personally recommend the 2500k for you. It has a rock steady reputation and a great overclocker. Save yourself the $200 (2700k) and buy the i5, not sense in wasting the money.

i5-2500k for gaming and general use. if you don't have workloads that need 5+ threads, you won't benefit from the i7, and the Hyperthreading (the virtual cores 5-8) can in some cases hurt gaming performance and generates more heat.

i5-2500k is the best intel chip for gaming and general use.

enjoy!

as for motherboard, look for p67 or z68 boards so you can overclock the chip, maybe something for ASUS, Gigabyte or ASRock.

get 1600 mhz RAM, maybe something from Corsair or G.SKILL. cas latency is irrelevant (you won't see the difference) so just go for what's cheap.

*edit* personally, i like these parts, but that's me. =) i like mATX, but this is just an example:

ASRock mATX motherboard for one GPU.

Decent, cheap Corsair RAM, 8 GB, with some OC headroom

2500k was the easy decision.

For the mobo..

You basically have 3 options, Asus, Gigabyte, or ASRock.

P8P67 Pro , P67A-UD3 , P67 ExtremeGen3

Ram..

Corsair Vengeance or GSkill Ripjaws.

I was thinking about the i5-2500k since many users here use it. It's been around for a while and as far as I know they have nice overclocking speeds too.
Now for Ram, I like Corsair and GSkill as much as Mushkin. So I will look for those.
And Of course for motherboards I favor Asus, Gigabyte, MSI. For ASRock I only heard of that company recently, but I'll take it in consideration if Frys have it when I go this Saturday.

The 2500K will serve you well if all you need a fast CPU for is gaming. I picked up the 2600K when it came out because I convert a lot of movies and music, wanted the extra threads in case they were ever necessary, and frankly just had a lot of money to spend lol.
