Q6600 G0 High Temps Even w/ Low Vcore

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I'm currently having a problem with my Q6600.

I've been running it stably at 3.4 GHz with only 1.25V Vcore, and yet I get pretty high temps (reaches 75-77 degrees with Intel Burn Test on Maximum). Temps are identically reported as such by HWMonitor, CoreTemp and RealTemp.

My specs and settings are as follows:

Motherboard: Asus P5QL Pro
Cooler: CM Hyper 212+
3 case fans (120 mm 53 CFM intake in front, 92 mm 87 CFM exhaust at the rear, 120 mm 40 CFM intake on the side panel blowing onto the GPU)

CPU Freq: 378x9
RAM Freq: DDR2-756
Vcore: 1.2500V
LLC enabled
Memory Voltage: 1.9V
NB Voltage: 1.20V
SB Voltage: 1.50V

I consider myself rather lucky with the chip as it allows me to overclock with rather low voltages (I can undervolt to 1.032V at stock, 3 GHz 1.2V).

However, the problem is the temps, which I think are rather high given my voltage.

Granted, I live in a tropical country and my ambient temps range from 28-32ºC, and my case isn't the best out there (generic TrendSonic), but with such low voltages, I believe I should be getting lower temps.

Any solutions? I'm thinking that I may have a good chip, but an uneven IHS so lapping could be an option, but I was hoping there was something else I could do that isn't as drastic.

IBT is a great test but does max out the heat.

Have you tried reseating the HeatSink?

what does prime95 give you temps wise?

Well, with such a high ambient temp, that generic case and only a coolermaster hyper Tx3, you're temps are perfectly normal.
These Q6600's are hot CPUs.

I don't have a TX3 anymore, I have a Hyper 212+ in push/pull config so I'm really counting on better temps.

@aramil
Prime95 gives me 65-68 degrees.

The biggest factor in your high temps is the ambient being so high. Also, a case with poor airflow wont help either.
I was touching 80C in IBT with around 26c ambient at 3.4ghz and 1.4v with my TRUE using 2 kaze 3k in push pull.

Looks like you are going to have to have a go at lapping your CPU.

Also check that the bottom of your Heatsink is flat / and that the mounting preasure is even (ie not pulling to one side)

This was my E6400 but I have done my Q6600 too:

i highly highly recommend an H50 or equivilent for cases with not the best airflow. as an H50 with decent fans will def help you out.

Try another fan on your 212, do a push/pull on it with 2 120mm's, should help a little

But that's the thing, I'm only running on 1.25V. If I run 1.4V I'm pretty sure my temps would rocket to the high 80s. Installing a second intake fan in front (by removing the 5.25" bay covers) doesn't reduce temps (1 degree at most, could simply be variance).

I'm already running in push/pull with the stock blademaster and a second 53 CFM Deepcool Windblade fan. Picking up a 110 CFM Everflow fan once stocks are available in a nearby shop.

I don't have $70 (that's the equivalent of the cost of an H50 here) to spare just to get a cooler.

well ill tell you one thing check out these temps with about 23C ambient. and the load average right now is about 73%-80% dont mind the terrible vcore i was messing with the clocks today. was trying to get it stable at 3.8Ghz :\ got it to 17hrs of prime95 ok. but just after that i started getting blue screens. i think the value ram has caught up with me. :\
