I bet RIM don't rely on their own service. You never use any sort of communication method as your sole use of contact, everyone has a redundant/secondary communications method. If they don't, that's not RIMs fault.

Electronics are not infallible and they are not 100% reliable. You always need multiple communications options just as you would have a back up server in case your mainframe went down.
Damn. Well I guess the DOD is not a very successful business owner...
They rely on BB servers...

Agreed , if anyone relied purely on blackberry service for their bussiness then they must be :

A) Mentally Retarded
B) Dumb as hell
C) Both of the above

Paying for a Blackberry DOES entitle you to this service. A BES/BIS plan is a REQUIREMENT for ALL Blackberry device. This situation is nothing like PSN.

Just to shed some light... This guy is in Ottawa and was on the radio...

First off, not a lot of people like this guy as he is the guy who made a living off of lawsuits for silly reasons.

Second, he wants 1.25$ per day. So he is taking RIM to court for 3x1.25$.

Third, he's doing this only to prove a point.

That's what is allegedly at stake here.

What is he going to do if he wins? Save $0.25 and then go buy 4 things from a dollar store?

For the personal consumer, I disagree, it is exactly like Facebook. Blackberry primarily sell mobile phones, they advertise BBM as a free app, not a necessity. It is a free service offered as a sweetener to entice customers, it is not a right. Therefore you should have no grounds for a lawsuit.

It's just a bunch of self-entitled people looking for a get rich quick scheme.
Self entitled maybe but not get rich. That doesn't work that well in Canada since mental anguish doesn't account for much here.

How can you sue someone, when you're not actually paying for a product? I could understand if there was a monthly subscription fee, but seriously do people really feel they are entitled to monetary compensation for the outage of a social service that they do not pay for?

It went down on Oct 10th and was back up on Oct 13th. I guess RIM owe people 3 days of their lives because apparently they fail to function without a phone with social connectivity.

That's like suing Facebook if their servers ever go down. It's just not right, is this really what the world has come to?
IIRC BlackBerrys are greatly targeted towards business users. That downtime may be lost money to some people. Not to mention this is an advertised feature people chose the BlackBerry for over other phones, thus they paid for it, they deserve to use it.

Sounds like you need your annual CI training.
