Worried about my computer.

Thread Starter
The simple question is this: What the hell is wrong with my computer?

What's that? That's not nearly enough information for you to help me? Oh. Okay. Here's the rest:

I've been having the weirdest problems with my PC over the past couple of days. It's my sig rig. I first noticed it when Avast antivirus couldn't update itself. It would say "the packet was lost" or something like that. I ended up reinstalling it. After that, every time I clicked to register it, it would freeze up and the window would go white (application not responding). I finally registered it and got it working again, but it still goes white sometimes.

There's crackling AND slowdown in streaming video. It changes the pitches of everything when it slows down, which is funny. Then depressing.

My fresh install of BF3, which I was playing fine when I got it, is now not working. Origin either says nothing, after which bf3.exe will show up in my task manager, but battlelog will never open, OR it will tell me that the game installed improperly.

What else?

Oh, things are loading slowly in general. Sometimes in various applications, a text field will "lag" and not display my keystrokes. Then, the words show up all at once.

Here's what I've done before breaking down and begging for help:

- chkdsk -- didn't do anything

- defrag -- wouldn't open. It said something like it couldn't run because the task scheduler wasn't open. Which it was.

- deep virus scan -- the most thorough one that free avast can do. It turned up nothing.

*Don't know if this is relevant: My system is overclocked pretty well, but I've tried to make the system as stable as possible. Right now I can run any stress test for 24+ hours without a single error. Again, don't know if the overclock would have anything to do with this.*

Here's my fear: It's either going to need a new install of Windows OR my boot drive is failing, which is even worse.

These seem like random problems to me, but with one common theme. Applications freezing and slowing down.

You know I love you, OCN. But, I'll love you even more if you help me out with this. Deal?

I hear Cella is good with computers.

Edit: Sorry I had to

It sounds like your PC has been compromised. Maybe the free version of Avast just doesn't cut it. Might be a silly suggestion but have you tried System Restore?

it sounds like possible malware. run combofix make sure nothing else is open and dont do anything while it runs. you might have to uninstall or disable your AV program. it is safe to do so. it will restart the computer one or two times. after it is done run malwarebytes and then ccleaner(the registry cleaner too) after that you should be free of any malware. if your problems persist check your event viewer(you can do this now before doing this process if you want)

Have you checked your drive's SMART? A clean W7 install wouldn't hurt, either, but I know that feeling, not wanting to go through all that trouble if there's something easier to do Try Combofix, and Ccleaner, always work for me. If those don't work, you may need a fresh OS.

If those programs don't seem to work, Maybe try Spybot Search & Destroy. A really trusted program that I would recommended for any malware or spyware not found by others.
