Advice. new comp to overclock..for O.C noob

Hi,

About to purchase a new computer: 2600 (i7: 3.4ghz), 8GB @ 1333, z68 MB, PSU 750w, 6950 (not sure which brand).

A few questions...Would be be better to have 1600 or 2000 ram or does it not really matter...what sort of difference does this make?

Does it matter what brand of 6950 i buy? If i buy HIS vs ASUS will it make a difference?

Finally, would it be better to buy 2GB 6950 or 1GB...will it really make a difference on BF3 or MW3?

Thanks in advance.

There isn't going to really be a performance change between 1600 and 2000.Heck you could go with 1333 and not see any change. Different brands sometimes have different clock/coolers so there will be different performance on those. Not sure on the ones you posted. I'm not too familiar with 2gb cards but bf3 uses up all my memory on both my cards so if the price difference isn't too much I recommend that

Thanks for the response. I was beginning to think something similar. I still don't really understand what the difference between 1333 and 1600 even gives you...Everything else makes sense. Cheers.

No problem. And from what I could find the price difference was pretty minimal between the 2gb and 1gb cards.

Make sure that if you plan to overclock to pick up an aftermarket heatsink. The intel stock one is pretty garbage

For beginners take a look at the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103065

I pushed my venegeance 1600 ram to 1996Mhz and the heatsinks on there are hardly warm. A good starter CPU cooler would be something from Zalman or Noctua. Nocutua D14 or Zalman CNPS10X would be good.

Technically, DDR3-2000 (CL9) will be faster than DDR3-1600 and 1333 (CL9), but realistically, there's no difference.

It's a few nanoseconds difference.

Also, the main difference between manufacturers will usually be a heatsink. For example, ASUS might put a larger heatsink on than HIS.

The vRAM, I can't really advise on.

Ram - Doesn't matter. they're all the same. At least to me they are.

your over clooking, You want a nice cpu cooler, something that will enable you to push it over the roof without any worries and stable results.

Noctua NH-D14

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835608018

I was recommended by a techie on this forum for this and watched dozens of reviews and in action, This thing is a beast !!!! you can never go wrong and will never have to worry about your rig crashing or over heating.

Yes that's a good cooler.. but for a beginner build?

And no heatsink will stop your computer from crashing unless the cause actually is overheating lol
