Help overclocking my seemingly bad i7 930!

Thread Starter
I recently water cooled my CPU and chipset, and wanted to get back into overclocking. Seems my processor doesn't really like it too much however.

I was attempting to reach a 200mhz bclock, with a x20 uncore, and could not reach it within my own acceptable QPI/VTT voltage range. Since moving my uncore down to x18, I could hit 200mhz with a 1.435V QPI/VTT. (Although I should really move to a x16 uncore and see if I can lower my VTT even more, as my RAM will be running at x8)

My RAM is fully stable at x8 -> 1600mhz (went ahead and just set DRAM to 1.66V as it's rated), and that's exactly what the Corsair chips are rated for. I have 6 DIMMs, 2gb each (3 are 7-8-7-20, 3 are 9-9-9-24, since I couldn't afford the tighter timings the second time around. I set all 6 to run at 9-9-9-24-2T)

I raised my CPU multiplier back to x21 for 4.2ghz, set my LLC to level-2, and began to raise my Vcore. This is where I started having trouble. Took me quite some time to even be able to get past my POST screen. Finally I could get to where Windows STARTS to boot up, but just freezes. I stopped raising my Vcore when I got to somewhere around 1.46V.

Currently I've lowered my Vcore to 1.4V, running a 190mhz bclock for 3.99ghz. (Just something I chose that seemed to be stable enough for general usage until I go back in.)

Any suggestions? (Also, I haven't touched voltages for IOH, QPI PLL, CPU PLL, ICH, etc)

You just may need to disable HyperThreading. I hit around 1.55v with HT on at 4.2GHz. 1.36v @4.2GHz with HT off

Man, I'd like to be able to leave HT enabled. What do you think is a safe Vcore for 24/7 use on water? I'm new to having such low temps, got liquid a week ago smile.gif

Possibly I'd have to tweak some other voltages besides my Vcore and VTT? If I lower my CPU multiplier, its fully stable.

Make multi 21x seems to be more stable on that with anything 4.0+ and start vcore at 1.38 and bump 2 notches until stable

You should be able to do it with your cooling for sure. I'm running my i7 950 @ 4ghz (23x175) on 1.250v at work with a Coolermaster V8. Try 200x21 with 1600mhz Ddr3 and 3200mhz on qpi freq. 1.350v on qpi should be plenty for that and 1.400v should be more than enough. Unless you have a real bad chip, but I think you can run prime for a bit like that, then adjust accordingly.

CPU multi is already on x21 frown.gif

I just moved my uncore down to x16, and lowered my VTT (still stable at 200mhz BCLCK).

I made a mistake on my above post though, I was running at a 180Mhz BCLCK for 3.8ghz. Voltage was not locked in super efficiently, but needed to be somewhere around 1.4V.

Just disabled HT, and hit 4.2Ghz (21x200) with a 1.425V Vcore (HW Monitor shows 1.41V). CPU temps are about 1 degree colder with higher V and no HT.

I'll reenable HT tomorrow, and see how much Vcore I really need to hit 4.2Ghz stable. Last time I tried I stopped at 1.46V.

Edit:
To Hambone:
DDR3 is set at 1600Mhz, QPI is set to 3600Mhz, QPI/VTT is set to 1.33V
Gives me a stable 200Mhz BCLCK with a x15 CPU Mult. Bumping CPU Mult to x21, and I run into my afore mentioned problems frown.gif

This ^. 20x multi was very unstable to me compared to 21x

For the people who keep saying to set my CPU mult to x21, sorry for the confusion. My CPU mult has always been at x21. In my first post, I said my uncore was at x20 smile.gif

I should be posting voltages needed to reach 4.2 with HT enabled soon!

Your required vcore is high like mine. I can't get fully stable @ 4.0 with vcore set to 1.2625 and LLC on 2. It is very stable with vcore 1.2125 and LLC 1 @ 3.8 GHz though. If you do some searching, there's a crapload of people who got 4.0 with vcore around 1.1875.

What's with this? I need 1.34ish Vcore to hit 4.0 GHz on my i7 930, and 1.376 to hit 4.1 stable! With HT, that is. Haven't tested without HT

I have really high voltages too, I am under water as well, but I don't want to blow my poorly-cooled VRM's with too much voltage. They get hot enough after 24 hours of Prime as it is (83 degrees, if you care to know).
