Help overclocking my seemingly bad i7 930! - Page 2

My thoughts are to start with removing the looser timing rams modules. It's easier to overclock stable on 3 dimm's as compared to 6.There are a good bit of overclocking guides that go in better detail on the other voltages that you might need to adjust.I have not had the pleasure of overclocking a Gigabyte X58 board yet.So I can not really help on which to adjust as all mother boards need different adjustments.Start with the ram removal first and see if it makes a difference.

I have really high voltages too, I am under water as well, but I don't want to blow my poorly-cooled VRM's with too much voltage. They get hot enough after 24 hours of Prime as it is (83 degrees, if you care to know).
Early D0 chips rocked, later ones like mine sucked (relatively). What's your batch number?

I bought mine last August from Newegg. A friend of mine bought his there a few days before and he got a good one. His stock voltage was less than 1.1 I think and he won't dare overclock.

My 930, is 0.95 volts @ stock, @ stock not only 1333 mhz in ram.
My 930 is 4ghz ht on 1.275,4Ghz HToff 1.25
930 @ 4.2 1.325 ht on, Did not try ht off.
Thos are folding ghz 12 hour runs.
Make sure ram settings / timing / volts right. Qpi 1 above slow. Cpu volts is a crap shoot.
Look over seting qpi mite need more. i needed 1.40volt for 4.2 ghz. 6 ram slots with 1 gb each dim.

My batch number is 3951A694 according to the box. I bought her used from a fellow OCNer (Segovax). I am assuming this is the right box for the right chip that he gave me, no swapping boxes by accident.

Get him to swap chips with you. Seriously, with a chip like that you could probably hit 4.4+.

So your chip was made in Costa Rica in week 51 of 2009. Mine was made in Costa Rica in week 8 of 2010. Not too far apart. You could check the actual cpu surface to be sure you got the correct chip.

I already tried to trade with him. I even offered $20 and I would make the swap and give him a warranty on it, etc. No dice. He likes the fact that he has an awesome chip, even if he won't use it. No matter, my 2700K and mobo are here. I hope I didn't get another dud to pass on to my wife.

I don't think it's a RAM issue, or a QPI issue. Everything is perfectly stable with my 200Mhz BCLK, as long as I put my CPU multiplier very low, like x15. I'm running all 6 DIMMs at the timings of the slower chips. Takes about 1.43V Vcore to get to 4.2Ghz HT off. If I remember correctly, my VTT is at 1.33V or so (and I just threw DRAM at 1.66V). Would you still recommend taking the looser modules out for a test? I still haven't gone back to see what kind of Vcore I need for 4.2Ghz with HT on yet. Temps aren't an issue, just not sure what kind of max voltages for daily use I should be looking at while under water. I've also been looking for some possible guides that go into other voltages. At the moment, I've just been increasing Vcore while increasing CPU mult.

According to this document http://download.intel.com/design/pro...hts/320834.pdf
1.55 is the absolute max voltage the processor can take, but that lies outside the maximum functional range. My guess is that even at 1.43, you're probably going to get some degradation, but I'm no expert. I would think 24/7safe voltage would be somewhere below 1.4, temperature dependent.
