New graphics card(s)

Thread Starter
Hi Guys

I've been able to sell off my 2 560 ti 1 gb cards. The 1gb of ram proved too little for the games I'm playing at a resolution of 1920x1200.

I'm working with two different plans, but I'm stuck between them:

Plan 1:
2x N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II 2GD5/OC

and then in 2013, I'll get a 680, which I'll SLI in my new build in 2014.

or

Plan 2:
1x N580GTX Lightning Xtreme Edition

and then in 2012/2013, if my performance starts to decrease I'll get a second one, and run them in SLI - that setup might be good enough to move to my 2014 build?

If you're using just one monitor I'd recommend going with the 1 GTX 580, then you can SLI later on for better performance and / or multi-monitor gaming.

Not sure why you had VRAM issues with your current setup. 1gb of VRAM should be fine all the way up to 2560x1600, perhaps only 2560x1440 if you really push the post processing.

In general though, the SLI setup will offer much better performance for the money, but you do get the occassional SLI issue.

GTX 580 is a great card, but actually horrendous in terms of performance for the cost. For example, it cost's ~38% more than a 2.5gb GTX 570, but only get ~15%-20% more performance.

Niether is a bad option btw. Either way you'll be more than happy.

In hind sight...the 580 Lightning now and one later is your best option. Next year you'll be in two 580's vs 560Ti's. It's personal decision.

Something to think about:

Right now you'd have greater performance up front with the two 560Ti's, BF3 Ultra settings no problem. One GTX 580 Lightning BF3 High settings no problem.

Just in case you were thinking the 2GB would be better tha 1.5GB VRAM on the single monitor and that was influencing your decision.

I've got a video shown by Linus that proves that there is only 1 FPS difference between 1.5GB vs 3GB VRAM on a single monitor. The VRAM just isn't being utilized until multiple monitors come into play and spread across three screens.

Good luck. Either option is a win.

In the Total War series playing big battles I persistantly see a RAM usage, using MSI Afterburner, of 1014 MB on both cards.
I've seen the same in Arma 1 + 2.

I know, BUT, after reading these threads:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...php?t=18284509
http://www.overclock.net/pc-games/11...ram-usage.html
... I'm just not sure if 2GB is enough a year from.

You don't say, 2x MSI 560 Ti 2GB cards are cheaper than 1x 580 Lightning 3GB card.

Go for a 580 now, and SLI them when prices drop. Put a mild OC on it just for fun and you will be fine.

I would say either go with
evga gtx580 classified 3gb
or
msi gtx580 lightning xtreme edition.
You do SLI later on but I don't think you need sli for that resolution.

So, 1x N580GTX Lightning Xtreme Edition it'll be.

I have another question though. Will my Corsair TX850 PSU be able to handle two of those cards in SLI overclocked to 900MHz (70MHz ~ 10% overclock)?

I have estimated that my system components excluding graphics card(s) uses approx 213W

CPU 130W (standard clock 95W, but I have overclocked it about 30%)
RAM 10W?
HDD 9W
DVD/BluRay 10W?
Fans 44,28W (Have 3x Enermax 140mm LED fans that use a whopping 7.6W each, thats why power consumption is so high)
Motherboard LEDs etc 10W
Does this seem right?

Should be, you probably won't need to up the voltage much for 900mhz.

TX850 should be fine without overclocking much, but overclocking may be pushing it.
