965/1090T or FX-4100/6100? Im looking to upgrade, going with either a Giga 990FXA UD3 or 5 and want a minimum of 4.5Ghz. I know the 965 can do it with C3 no sweat, but i havent studied chips much and im upgrading from a Brisbane 5000+BE.

Both the AM3 chips are BE's, what does Turbo mean for the AM3+ chips?

Going with an AM3 chip limits me with 1333 mem, going with AM3+ gets me 2000 mem.

I dont do a 'lot' of gaming, and currently the heaviest thing i have is Command and Conquer 4 or RA3. But i do a LOT of Adobe PS7, CorelDraw 9, Dreamweaver 8 and really at any time could have 20+ tabs open in Firefox, one of which is Netflix. Keep in mind that my current build has been running for 3.5 years, and will live on as my wifes PC, so im not looking at getting the best now and dumping it in 6 months, or 3 years lol.

I have 8 gigs now, going with 16 cause i can for cheap.

Please, leave your tudes at the door, im asking cause i want hard data, not opinions about 'fail-dozer' or anything like that.

Nope, they can't. Only golden chips can do 4.5ghz with voltages under 1.55v.

Average OC is more like 4ghz-4.1ghz.

FX is out of the question, btw. A Phenom II at 4ghz is faster than FX at 5ghz.

Nope. Phenom IIs can handle up to 2000mhz, though 1600mhz is a sweetspot.

What do you mean 'golden' chip? Ive seen this used for vid cards before.

So youre saying that a BE can only handle a 500-700 OC now?

Golden chip means that it overclocks exceptionally well, drawing less power at the same frequency, thus needing less voltage.

Yes. An average Phenom II will overclock to 3.9ghz-4.1ghz, good ones up to 4.3ghz. After that you need a really good chip.

If I were you, I'd get an 960T. It's a hex-core with 2 cores locked, so you might have a chance at unlocking it. It usually overclocks better than other Phenom IIs. It sells for the same/lesser price than the quads.

Get a thuban. 1100T or 1090T. For what you are doing it seems like you need 6 cores. Also don't expect them to clock to 4.5, some can do it , but its really lucky to get one that clocks that high. If you get one that hits 4.2-4.3, it will still be faster than a FX at 4.5

Well, i failed to mention this will be water cooled with a somewhat 'extreme' method, so thermal ceiling wont be a big deal.

Every chip is different, it's a silicone lotto, you might not even be able to break 4GHZ if you get a bad chip. But typically 4 - 4.2GHZ is average for Thubans. Not only has mine reached 4.5GHZ and beyond, but it's done on 1.476v under load - call it golden if you want.

then what you need is the dozer for its multithread capability, which suprasses every other cpu in the market, including all intels.

If you do a lot of photoshop, it might be worth looking at the 8120

the 8000s are supposed to be fantastic for workstation apps

also, a bulldozer at 5GHz is in fact going to be faster than a phenom 2 at 4GHz
