Is today's Shell Shocker Deal a good budget build? - Page 2

I don't think it is a terrible build at all for that budget. I'd like to see someone beat it for new parts. Sure the RAM could be better but for the price it'd be really difficult to get a better deal.

You are completely right though, replace the PSU and add a GPU. I'd also suggest the 460 card.

Tossed that together in 10 mins with no real effort, you could do better especially with MIR's

The deal is not really good, its ok like the other posters said If you are looking for a system with quality parts, you are looking at no more than $20-40 more. IMO its just not worth it for the shell-shocker deal.

Would you go as far as to say the 460 is the best "bang-for-buck" for a lower budget?

Ok, that looks about right, thanks for going through the trouble of putting that together, that makes me feel like we don't need to rush and make a decision we might regret.

What parts specifically concern you? Is the motherboard alright? For me, its mainly the case and (obviously) power supply that have me worried.

Oh, I just noticed, lol. I thought it was 2x2GB but you're right.... Ewwww....

Ok, so now we're leaning away from the bundle, but we'll probably use this same idea as the concept for the build. I'll look over so more reviews and discuss this with my buddy some more. Thanks guys.

EDIT: I didn't mean to forget you wheth4400!

Case / PSU like you said,
Also the 1x4GB Ram is crap
I would wait for HDD to drop again too. The F3 is an amazing HDD.

Sounds good, and yes I've been around the forums long enough to hear about the wonders of the F3, I just wish it was ~$50 again. I had heard about the WD disk shortages, but people really weren't kidding when they said disk prices were going to go up! I might give him one of my WD Blues instead of going for a new drive at these prices, since I've been thinking of changing them out for newer drives anyway.

So, we'll be patient and plan the build out some more. Right now, I'm really liking that NXZT 210 Case LuckySe7evns mentioned earlier. I'm not getting him a crappy case for his first build. Thus, this shell shocker deal is a no go. I'll update the OP this evening once I've looked around a bit more at people's suggestions.

Also, do you think I should stick with 4GB total RAM or bump him up to 8? I know 8GB IS overkill, but 4GB feels too small (or at least it felt too small to me when I had it).

RAM is really cheap right now, so i would say yes!

Also, look out for Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals

Personally id spend the extra few dollars for 8gb. Ram is cheap now, and like anything (ie HDD's) prices can fluctuate with the global market. 1333 cl9 sticks are fine for cheap gaming with sb really, but given the opportunity id try to find some a bit faster like 1600, often you can find a set for the same price as a 1333 set.

For a budget gpu I would suggest gtx 460 or 6790 depending on prices.

It matches the 6850 in performance but tends to go on sale a lot more and for a lot less. So to answer your question...yes, at least in your price range.

Just keep your eyes peeled on the Online Deals section, there is almost always a 460 on page 1.
