Graphics card or console?

Thread Starter
I am planning on either buying a new graphics card or a console.

My current PC setup is:

Intel Q8200 Core 2 Quad 2.33 Ghz
MSI P7NGM - Digital
2 x 2GB DDR2 800 Mhz RAM
Cooler Master 460W power supply

My budget is about $250. I had gtx 560 and hd 6870 (only one) in mind.

I need to know if these graphics card will work on my motherboard? and will there be a CPU bottleneck?

I am upgrading so that I can play Skyrim, FIFA 12 etc.

Also is my current setup going to deliver better graphics and performance than a console?

Thanks in advance.

Yes and no, respectively

Yes

I'd pick graphics card. I know fifa 12 has way better graphics on PC and it is the same as console counter parts unlike previous fifa games.

adding a fast card like GTX560 will definitely provide better performance for your pc versus a console. even a GTS450 or HD5770 will have better graphics than console.

How many HDDs are you running?
I recommend at least a 500w coolermaster psu for HD6870 or GTX560 but if you're only running 1 harddrive, cpu, 2 sticks of ram and nothing more, that 460w might be enough.

As for the cpu bottleneck, im sure there wont be any, or it will be minimal and not noticeable.
Your cpu has low clockspeed but its fast.
My sister in law has the same cpu and it gives her similar performance as my phenom at 3ghz.

1 x 1 TB HDD
1 x 500 GB HDD
2 external HDD (which I can switch off when I'm playing a game)

I might get another hard drive and another 2 sticks of RAM in the near future

His PSU is plenty even if he wants to OC. I would suggest the GTX 560ti. It is within your $250 budget

GET A 6790. I'ts almost as fast as the 6850 and sometimes the 6870. Its only about $140 Newegg.

When I say gtx 560 I don't mean the TI version. I've been reading at a lot of places that the HD 6870 is an older card and released as a stopgap to the 7000 series.

Is the 6950 the right card to compare against the gtx 560?

get a 560Ti. you'll have less issues with drivers in the long run.

oc your cpu to at least 3.0GHz to get a decent frame rate in newer games.

Well you said your budget was $250. and the 560ti is within the budget, so why wouldn't you get it? XD

The 560 is closer to the 6850, in terms of performance and the 560ti is close to the 6870 in terms of performance.
