Do you have any links on their 'official' statement about browser launching? I haven't seen anything - but then again I haven't looked.
I don't remember any particular articles about the battlelog, but one of the "benefits" was the ease of use in searching and joining games. Browser approach let them have more up to date server listings I guess, like when you click on a server and it refreshes instantly to show how many players are in it.
Then there was the whole facebook experience that they added to it. Which may or may not interest that many people. The stat tracking is all fine and cool but BF games have always had various sources to keep track of stats and unlocks independent of the developers so that isn't really new but nice to have at the start.
What they didn't make clear its that is a form of DRM. We'll see how long it holds up I guess before pirating becomes an issue.
