Yep, I have noticed that too. I also don't like that I can't initiate the cube with a mouse button (no option for it). I like compiz better, but it doesn't play well on KDE 4.2.

BTW, I have heard that compiz-fusion might be closing its doors. There was a post on the compiz list where a dev said he wants to either create a complete compiz DE or just drop the project all together. He said something about being pissed at the Gnome people and then saying that KDE has its own 3D desktop (kwin), thus meaning if compiz wants to survive, it needs its own DE.

What ya know about this?

Desktop effects are moving towards integration. It has always been much better to have the DE handle everything so as to keep the system "clean". So yeah, for Compiz to survive it needs to evolve into its own DE. KWIN just needs a few more effects and functions and it will totally replace Compiz. I really want to see a GNOME composite manager, but seeing how GNOME is a "no frills DE" I doubt we will get much more than that simple xterm manager it has right now.

but look how incrementally GNOME is developed and XFCE is even worse.

any other DE's that can take the helm then, and provide KISS functionality with nice eyecandy? not KDE though.

Wish they had Docky for OpenSolaris.

I installed OpenSolaris last night in a VM. I am not able to get sound, though. If I had the hard disk space, I would dual-boot, but I don't want to resize my existing partitions.

I think OpenSolaris still has a ways to go in order to be a viable desktop OS, but it already has some advantages over Linux. 2008.5 would not even boot on my machine, but the latest version 2008.11 boots just fine. It does take a LONG time to install though, and it seems to use more memory than the average Linux distro with Gnome. Not sure why that is.

I am going to try Nexenta -- Solaris kernel with Linux userland.

This is because of ZFS. In order to increase performance, ZFS grubs all the memory it can. If some other application needs it it relinquishes just enough to run it. It's kinda like Windows Vista in that way.

My only issue with 8.11 is that networking didn't work out of the box, but after some soliciting for help on their boards I figured out how to install drivers for my NICs. Works perfectly now. Audio did work out of the box. Shock and awe.

I like it very much and if I was going *nix full time I would use this instead of Linux, just to be different.

Not on my laptop though. That one is waiting for Ubuntu 9.04. Maybe this time Atheros wifi will work without Windows driver blobs.

Yeah. If that's the case, then I guess I can't complain too much. ZFS is definitely worth a few MB's of RAM. In fact, ZFS is the main reason I would choose Solaris over Linux. I love being able to create snapshots on the fly and also having data checksummed.

It's the opposite for me. No sound but my Internets worked out of the box.

I wish the OpenSolaris project had more devs. Linux dwarfs it in terms of number of people working on it.
