I have used Ubuntu a little bit before, my first real experience was with 9.04 I think. I loved the desktop cube and just having four desktops made life so easy. but alas, I found that in my multi-computer household I needed (or thought I needed) all my computers on one platform and Linux could not handle my needs (Blu-ray playback and video card folding).

Now, I am determined to kick the Windows habit, to learn Linux and move on to more "grown up" distro's than ubuntu . I have two systems switched right now, my main storage server with a 3TB RAID 5 and my old (read ancient) laptop. I figure I can run a Windows VM to handle my Blu-ray's unless WINE will run the programs I guess.

@Thumper: If you own the blurays then just dump them on a HDD by using MakeMKV and then run them through XBMC and enjoy the best HTPC setup you can make. Just make sure if you have an Nvidia card to turn on the VDPAU rendering and studio level color correction.

Not to have a bias but PCLOS would have to have changed considerably in the last year for me to not shudder at the thought of it. If you like Mint then move to Kubuntu for the KDE fix. Or even Fedora.

Yahh I just loaded pclos up in VMware a little while ago...think I'll check out Fedora or Kubuntu.
Thanks for the recommendations.

I suggest trying Arch in a VM at least, even if you don't like it, you can try out nearly every DE/WM quite easily.

Yea the nice thing about Arch is that adding and removing DEs is no harder than adding and removing browsers.

... and this is different than say... Ubuntu? (with the exception of Gnome 3 which doesn't play well with Unity)?

It is different, yes. Ubuntu doesn't always play nicely if you start swapping out DEs. With a bit of fiddling you could certainly make it work (that's the beauty of Linux... almost all issues can be fixed), but it's not quite as simple as with Arch. Arch is not built to run with any particular DE, or any particular software combination. It doesn't assume anything. It is completely modular.

Yeah, if I want to try, say, openbox, I just type pacman -S openbox and I'm done, I log out and select it at the login screen.
