Conky is able to be completely modified from a .conkyrc file. Its text based, and has a ton of information online about how to modify it. Its much easier to start with an example and modify it from there. I've rewritten my configuration file about a hundred times, just because I want something different or for it to display more or less or change its size or color. If you need an example .conkyrc file, and can't find one in searching, let me know and I'll post mine here or PM.

EDIT:
Here's mine.

Don't use sudo or else the file will be owned by root and not your own user.
I've always used sudo and never had a problem though.

If you're editing an existing file that will not edit it's permissions. It's unnecessary and potentially harmful and dangerous, though.

If you're creating a new file then yes, root will be the owner.

I know what it is - I don't think it's relevant to the discussion, unless I missed something.
