yep, I know people in a lot of different timezones so it's quicker to visually figure out whether someone is in night or day by geography than to mentally recall the time difference.

With Unity, I think it's a mixed bag. There's something I think they did very well, and that is how the window can merge with the top panel to save more space and it looks pretty cool IMO. However, the whole sidebar/menu addition definitely doesn't work. It's a real pain trying to open an application I want quickly (one that isn't merged with the sidebar) by using the mouse. When I press 'super', and type something in, pressing enter, it doesn't get me the application I want all the time. For example, I typed in 'terminal', pressed enter, and a calculator came up. Right clicking on the sidebar buttons can only open, and focus the applications, it doesn't minimize them (why?!). That means in order to minimize an application, you have to press the button on the window panel. Also, when an application is maximized, moving the cursor to the side of the screen brings out the panel. What's the problem here? Well that means if you want to press a button of an application that is on the left side of the screen, and you accidentally bump the left side of the screen, the button gets covered up by the panel. This makes pressing the Firefox "back" button when the application is maximized a frustrating experience. They definitely need to dump the side panel and the menu, and start with something fresh. Gnome 3 does it a little better, but it still isn't up to my standards either.

the inflexibility of Unity reminds me of proprietary software. The learn-to-love-it philosophy toward poor design is pretty aggravating mad.gif
