Gnome 2 is Mate now and is quite widely used. Cinnamon was using the Gnome 2 panel for some time before it went for the newer shell based version.

So far these are the ones i will be including.

I would say unity/gnome-shell/cinnamon constitute their own option, as they are all 3 based on the innards of gnome 3, but they are as different to each other, as saying going to KDE form LXDE.  Gnome-shell is very extensible, where unity is not, and cinnamon (not sure of, as its to buggy and unstable for me and messes with gnome-shell which i use).

I'm not so sure of including obscure DE's such as trinity and razorqt, I've heard of trinity its a fork of the kde 3 codebase and as far as i'm concerned, can be lumped into with KDE in general. As for razorqt, never even heard of it.

Only reason I include Gnome 2/Mate, there are a few distro's that are rather popular, like debian/redhat/centos that still use Gnome 2, and due to all the whining, Mate was forked from Gnome 2 source (to me its not enough different from Gnome 2 to warrant its own choice) and I really do not think it will be kept around much longer. I don't believe the Mint community is driven enough to keep it updated for modern times, and most distro's don't take it serious enough of a fork to include it in their default repo's (from what i remember, the original fork author has abandoned the project as well).

Pile enough extensions on Gnome-Shell and it actually approaches usability. All it really needs now is a proper task bar extension. All I've found so far is one that has text, but collapses multiple windows into a single entry in an idiotic fashion, and the one I'm using right now, which separates the windows but doesn't display text.

I think with a decent task bar I could use Gnome-Shell 24/7.

That's the first one I was talking about. It does a horrible job of combining windows. Maybe it just doesn't work right in Gnome 3.4.

But yea, I'm probably going to look into modifying/making my own, but definitely not tonight.

This is what it does for me, i'm on fedora 17, gnome-shell 3.4.1. You can also modify the js  so the pop up appears faster, dunno I like it. It does what i need it for.
