I agree. And again, if my music player crashes (say, AudacityAudacious), I wouldn't lose 1h of text typing because my text editor is not compiled with mp3 support (I exaggerate). It also make productivity better since you don't have to wait for the laggy auto arm-twisting "OI, REPORT MAI CRASH" application to do it's thing or close before I can start my music player again. How many times have I waited for "Please wait, we are loading the Lag"...

ah. I've always used 64bit although I'm in the process of buying a netbook- are 64bit intel atom gpu drivers available or will I have to go 32 bit? I've done some research and while 32 bit systems aren't the twice as slow as they supposedly could be they are atleast a %10-15 drop in performance.

I agree, although on most distros (cough*not-buntu*cough) the only de that would really be in that range in KDE. I mean, I have gnome now using 170. even as it shipped in debian 220. sure its gnome 2 but the current xfce and lxde are even lighter. my general stance is that if the ram is holding something useful I'm fine with the ram it needs. but when you run ubuntu suddenly the core os is hogging a couple hundred megs and there is absolutely no user noticeable difference of function between that and the debian live cd that I can not stand. waisted ram.

anyway,

will post LXDE in moment. installed the same dwm package from my wheezy install so no changes there, havn't had a chance to work with compiz or openbox yet.

its simple, straight forward, it has many un seen features that people most people dont even use, ( one of my favs is the way to have 4 monitors on one screen by pressing a button then choosing witch one you want to work on at the moment) and alot of stuff i wish windows had as far as updating ease, plus it can install itself for you on a windows installation creating a multiboot for you
