its simple, straight forward, it has many un seen features that people most people dont even use, ( one of my favs is the way to have 4 monitors on one screen by pressing a button then choosing witch one you want to work on at the moment) and alot of stuff i wish windows had as far as updating ease, plus it can install itself for you on a windows installation creating a multiboot for you

1. don't like windows, and about half of the 1200 distros out there can do that
2. everyone using every distro on pretty much every WM uses workspaces
3. debian has everything positive you just listed
4. 'simple' or dumbed down? its great for beginners but frankly debian live isn't much if any harder and yet has a much smaller foot print a wider range of choices. I have stopped recommending ubuntu or anything ubuntu based to anyone. LMDE is a far better choice for a beginner. but I perfer pure FOSS debian

you have to tell it to start emerald. I wouldn't know how to do this in a login manager but in xinit its just

emerald &
compiz

best thing to do would be to write a start up script with compiz, emerald, and whatever else you want to start (tint2, conky, etc.) then add a custom menu entry to your login manager

Just let Compiz handle it tongue.gif

ccsm -> window decorations -> command = " emerald " sometimes you'll need to postfix it with " --replace " and sometimes it'll just be " /usr/bin/compiz-decorator ". But usually just plain " emerald " in the command section works just fine.

And to make it more usable if it doesn't come preconfigured you'll need the move and resize plugins activated as well through ccsm.
