How's that ease of use? That means I can't just grab an ARM version of Libreoffice to do work I have to use some crippled thing instead right? Come to think of it where have they laid out the details as I'd like to know. This kind of ruins my day.

yeah, it's basically an Android/GNU hybrid that isn't compatible with either. I was pretty pissed because I was looking forward to it.

You were pissed...I was thinking Canonical had finally gotten the picture. Sigh...I guess I'd still use it as it seems like if done right it's still better than Android in how I would want to use a phone/pad.

while i haven't tried it myself (little brother is the only one with a nexus 7), remember this is pre-alpha software, save your hate/disappointment for a full release.

My Ubuntu Server 12.04. Got tired tired of the unreliability of WHS2011 so I made the switch. Started with just a console since server didn't have a GUI, and need to fix a couple things with conky but most everything I need is up and running. To make use of the the GTS 450 and 1090T, this will be folding on the side.

Have 1x 500GB drive dedicated to the operating system and 8x 2TB drives for data storage. Using SnapRAID, two drives are for parity, the other six for data, gives a grand total of 10.7TB for storage. I use mhddfs to create a vitual drive combining the data on all six data drives to make sharing simpler on client machines as they only need to access a single share. HTPC in living room and bedroom will be streaming Blu-Rays from this.

This is the first time I have really dived this deep into Linux and by far the most I have use a console since the good old DOS days. So far, I think I'm liking it much better than Windows for a server, fun to set up and tinker with.

The point was that it would be a regular phone/tablet when needed, but when docked to a computer/monitor/screen/whatever then it would enable a full Ubuntu session that runs side-by-side with the phone OS. At least, from my understanding of it.

Honestly, not much point in desktop apps on a phone with touch. Very few would be practical.

I entirely agree with the last part. But if this only runs Android when it's not docked then you might as well just buy a regular Android phone and do away with the unnecessary additional bloat that the docked OS will inevitably add.

The only thing this had going for it was that "desktop Linux" on a phone was a unique selling point (even if you and I didn't like the idea much). Now it doesn't even have that.

I don't think it's Android, similar though, as in a phone/tablet style OS and not a full fledged desktop OS. Most videos of it in action show it being a bit more advanced in that perspective.

I don't think it was ever marketed as a desktop OS on a mobile phone, but a desktop OS running side by side with their own Ubuntu mobile OS.

OK...so at some point if I dock it or whatever then I get Ubuntu ARM? And when I disconnect it then it reverts back to being something better than droid? Well, then I'm actually OK with that. Hopefully, it works out well if that is the case. I think I'm back to being excited about it but still cautious. See from the first news I was under the impression that it was going to Ubuntu ARM all the time.

That's how it's always been represented since it first came about tongue.gif

I don't know why anyone would think otherwise.
