Speaking of new Linuxes (or however we pluralize the term)...if I was to admit to being a lazy person and having fear that there may be problems in the future with Kubuntu do to something like that whole Mir thing; what KDE capable distro would you guys recommend these days. It doesn't have to start out with KDE but can add it later if necessary.

Kubuntu will adapt, if KDE isn't available for Mir, then kubuntu will likely come with Wayland.

PCLOS is a great distro for the lazy!

I would go with a KDE-centric distro like openSUSE or Chakra.

So if Ubuntu goes Mir and KDE says no...then the Kubuntu team will just purge the Mir display server and replace it with Wayland and no big issue? If so I'll be happy but I'm also checking for alternatives as it never hurts to have a backup (Bodhi is my current one but it's E17 which is nice but I think I'm KDE for life on a tradition computer). And basically, I'm just worrying about something that isn't a big deal right?

One day I might try it again...but I still haven't gotten over when I tried it in 2010 and it locked up every single time during the install. Sabayon also had that unfortunate issue at that time. Both will get a chance again in the future I think.

SUSE was OK but sometimes things just acted weird like audio. Chakra was a disappointment...no matter what I did GTK programs looked like crap even though I followed the damn wiki. And there where some other hiccups.

Anyone try some of the newer Arch forks? Manjaro or Bridge? I heard they're supposed to be "easy".

PS: Whatever happened to the small sub 1GB isos? I hate to start using DVDs but the only flash drive I got free is a 1GB size. frown.gif

Pretty much. Mir is only going to be the Ubuntu default to go with their own Unity. Nothing is stopping anyone from removing Mir and installing Wayland though, or just leaving Mir intact and using Wayland instead ( after all, Linux programs don't get loaded unless called. ) Or even staying on X.org and maintaining.

I reached out to Aaron on Google+ for his thoughts about how Mir might affect a project like Kubuntu. I asked for his thoughts about Kubuntu specifically because it is the most closely related to Ubuntu. He offered some excellent speculation and valuable thoughts. Here was his response.

You’d best ask the Kubuntu devs .. but here are my expectations:

Kubuntu is developed separately from Ubuntu these days. Canonical does not pay for development there anymore, and it becomes quite clear why. smile.gif

I would honestly expect Kubuntu and other *buntu derivatives to continue using x.org and eventually move to Wayland. This is because they are more likely to work with their upstreams, who are either staying on X11 or working on Wayland migrations, rather than jump to the Mir Unity shell.

Where it will get uncomfortable is that these derivatives will likely end up having to maintain X.org, Wayland, etc on their platforms and will no longer be able to rely on Canonical for this. This is likely to push the derivatives closer to each other and further from Canonical. Perhaps we’ll even see some simply rebase on Debian itself.

We’re still at least one year from that becoming a concern, however, and I honestly expect Ubuntu to keep x.org around for far longer than that on the desktop for practical reasons.

This also assumes that Mir will work acceptably on the desktop at all; that too remains to be seen.

compared to Ubuntu it might sip RAM. Compared to many other distros it doesn't (although with lxde you are left with a much more usable starting point for striping it down). All I really meant was that, once you've used a minimal distro, the idea of not being able to use a desktop and a browser doesn't compute. So, if you thought it does, then maybe you should step outside of your comfort zone and VM freebsd or something.

Agreed. MIR nothing to worry about. It may even be good for some people. There are a plethora of distros and it not like the Xserver and Wayland source code is going to vanish.

Also, in response to the posts above, I agree with Plan9. The whole "My distro is better than yours" thing is sophomoric and ridiculous. To me, it is whatever gets the job done or whatever is preferred. I used Slackware for years and had compile dependencies upon dependencies (seemingly into infinity sometimes), just to get the programs I needed working. It was incredibly time consuming and time is money. Now, I just choose the distro that best suits my needs out of the box and go from there. Open source software offers incredible choice and I think it is good policy to respect other people's choices. Any distro will do. It is what is done with it that matters. It should not be some kiddie pissing contest.

Of course, Ubuntu is a bit bastardized and Unity is a lame (IMO). However, Canonical has succeeded where no one else has (Sans Google). They brought Linux to the masses. I can only see that as a good thing. Ah! Imagine a world without Windows.

I'm actually looking forward to moving away from X. I'm not scared of the change. I'm hopeful that something will be standardized. And maybe, documentation will be proper. Seriously, the display and audio subsytems are the two places that need the most work in Linux, IMO.

EDIT: I seem to have dropped my English in the water.
