I'm with ya there. It would be nice if I could use my sound card's front panel ports.

well apparently my laptop has graphics problems with Fedora, so I think I'll hold off a while.

but... I did manage to make my Quake III theme a little more convincing.
Last screenshot of LQM I promise! (Click to show)

I agree, the audio is the hardest to work with imho.

Good attitude thumb.gif I hope MIR is an improvement over X. When I first found out about MIR I wondered if they would be able to get companies Like NVIDA to maintain another driver. Then I read that Canonical had landed a contract to provide the official OS for China. I think that kind of potential user base should help. 1.3 billion Chinese can't be wrong? tongue.gif

The China thing is a bit old tongue.gif

Also, you wouldn't exactly want a Chinese distribution handed out by the government who likes to spy and control every little detail their people do. They already do plenty to block stuff from an ISP level, but going to the OS level... that's a whole new level of spook.

I wasn't really scared of moving away from x, but now with mir, I get the feeling it's going to be very splintered and uncompatible for at least a year or so (after getting underway). Still, I am of the opinion that *overall* the *nix GUI eco-system is, een as it is, much better than that of windows. X itself might be gettig old, but the whole system of window managers, cross application themeing though GTK and Qt, and even gnome/kde/xfce are and make *nix, in terms of GUI, vastly superior to Windows. Just my very biased oinion though.

I agree that the biggest problem is audio. Well I see what pulseaudio tries to do with jack and that to improve support and ease of use in Linux, then did so at the expense of quality, stability and cross-platformness. If I had to chose between a new display server and a new sound system (assuming both would be well done) I would stick with x and go for better, easier sound.

I agree with all of your points, X is just deprecated, its not broken - it's old, misdocumented and cluttered. It's like a storage room someone's owned their whole lifetime. It's reliable, and it still has everything it used to... Just we aren't sure what all that entails anymore, can't exactly remember...

On the other hand, audio... is a broken mess. If we could somehow develop an audio subsystem from the ground up based on Jack's audio routing, but binary-compatible with Alsa (i.e. Alsa & OSS drivers work with it, but it supports the connectivity of Jack) all in a hot-plug capable, GUI-manageable BUS style management interface... We'd achieve audio perfection.

I'm a bit old biggrin.gif

It does make me wonder. An open source national operating system for China is strange enough to me. They are reportedly collaborating with Canonical to make it, so I would take that to mean they have their devs working on it as well. A perfect way to spy on people, but it could be part of their cyber defense plan now that I think about it. Having full control of their country's network is defensive advantage they already have over the US. I have over the last 10 years or so had a lot of firewall hits from China (and Russia). The machines I tracked down were Linux. It's truly hard to know their intentions with this OS. I have a friend in China, he's pretty tech savvy and seems to have his ear to the street. He's Buddhist and not a big fan of his government, to say the least. I'll see what he's hearing on his side of Pacific.
