I have the feeling that since 2007, or maybe 2009 I started seeing that OS on a lot more desktops.
IMO, as provided with my example as well, a noob to Linux will rather pick whatever is pushed in his face, having no knowledge of the GUIs.

I didn't mean to say that Gnome is any more friendly than KDE. Rather the opposite, KDE is far more flexible, perhaps because of the level of customization a lot of people consider it complicated.

AFAIK, most of the desktop distros in use are/were GNOME based - Debian/Ubuntu/Mint (versions 9 through 12 I think, before 13 came out), so that should be one of the reasons.

Ubuntu ships Unity rather than GNOME (has done for a few years) and Mint is DE agnostic. So the only example you've given there that's true is Debian and the reason Debian ships GNOME is because it's GTK (as Shrak and myself had already said, there was a lot of licensing concerns and FUD surrounding Qt in the 00s)

Doubtful, Kubuntu is pretty terrible. It doesn't do KDE any justice at all.

Qt performs better than GTK (which is why Qt is more popular on embedded systems and phones) and is a cleaner API in my opinion. Since Canonical's mobile offerings were written in Qt, it makes sense for Canonical to port their desktop interfaces over to Qt as well and thus merge the code bases.

Hehe, your famous duo. tongue.gif

I see. Yeah, regarding Ubuntu I meant the fallback session, it's still GNOME.
As to Mint, I was talking about LMDE - Linux Mint Debian Edition that was released in.... 2010? I remember MATE was GNOME2 based

Although generalizing it all, you are right.

Thanks thumb.gif
I've been focusing on other aspects rather than studying the different distros. redface.gif

dont agree, I had it running for a while on my HTPC, it looked amazing once id tweaked it,felt slick and ran the few programs i needed without fuss thumb.gif

it all depends on the usage scenario

Have you ever run KDE4 on anything but Ubuntu? I've ran KDE4 on a number of different distros and Kubuntu was by far and away the worst.

i didnt say it was the best but claiming kubuntus is 'terrible' is false

In the grand scheme of things, it is.

Kubuntu tends to have KDE bugs that no other KDE distro has, and the maintainers tend to break stuff with every new release (which gets fixed eventually, but still). It´s a good distro, just not the best. Only reason I still use it is because of the Ubuntu ppas, otherwise I would move to Fedora.
