It's really as simple as this:

[edit]
just tested it in xterm - same bug. So it must be a bash thing.

I have the same issue. It's quite annoying. When I hit up to scroll through my history, characters get stuck at the beginning of the line. They don't affect the commands being run, but it's ugly. It also gets in the way of readability. I'm using Urxvt and I've seen the issue in PuTTY sessions as well.

Hey,

I'm actually having the same issues with my Bash prompt.

Any time I enter text that is too long for the current xterm window size, instead of spilling on to the next line, it clobbers the first line then jumps to the next (see pictures)

Here is my PS1

Also note, I have "shopt -s checkwinsize" set
Code:
\[\e].\u@\h:\w\a\]\033[1;30m\]\t \033[0;31m\]\u\033[0;33m\]@\033[0;35m\]\h\033[0;34m\]:\[\033[0;32m\]\w\[\033[00m\](\$)

Any help will be greatly appreciated, I really want this sorted. I've also seen some good stuff on the Arch forums about similar issues, though none applied to me...

My prompt also has that issue with the wraparound. It's definitely something to do with the PS1 as I only see this issue with colored prompts. I use a similar PS1 at work though, and there's no issue. I really don't understand it. redface.gif

I had considered giving Zsh a spin, but bash seems to be the default in Linux so never found the motivation. What advantages does Zsh have?

Figured I'd post my arch setup.

I didn't think anyone outside of Ubuntu liked Unity.

VTE based terminals don't play well with some of the stuff I do.

Besides that, I just really like Unity.
