what's faster than Gb ethernet and doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

let me start off by saying that Gigabit works... I have a small lan that I often transfer large files on that could be faster. Benchmarking my raid got me over 500MB/s so im dreaming of pushing faster speeds onto my lan. Is there anything out there that doesn't cost ridiculous amounts of money?

Not really. There is 10 GB Ethernet used for high-speed server networks but it costs quite a bit.

if you are looking at only transferring large files you might increase throughput by turning on jumbo packets at both ends

edit: I guess this would depend on whether you are looking to increase throughput or decrease latency. The speed would also be limited by both computers involved in the transfer. If the media you are transferring to is slow you won't see any improvement from upgrading your LAN.

I was looking into this, I know I have a switch that supports 16K jumbo frames but I'm not sure everything else does. I'm building a new home file server that has a single Gb RJ-45 port. I need at least one port. From what I've read, the intel cards seem to be the best and they range from about ~$30 to $180 for a single RJ-45 port. how much of a difference are the more expensive cards going to make?
