ATI 6950 Bios Unlock to 6970 questions

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I am making this thread to get some information. I purchased some of the first 6950's which I unlocked to the 6970 bios with the +20 power in the CCC. My first question is, the card I have, Is it really a 6970 essentially? Meaning can I overclock it? Or am I supposed to just leave it at 6970 specs?

I heard some people kill their cards if they try to overclock their card any more.

If I can overclock anymore do I have to mess with voltages?

I am getting 30-35 FPS in BF3 and the FPS lowers when I scope, so its kinda annoying, I just want to make sure I am not going to kill my card, if I can overclock can anyone recommend a safe overclocked specs?

Also I seem to run into a problem when watching you tube and running a game or something else. The screen goes to these like, bars that goes down my screen, it only picks one color. I have gotten olive green, white, gray. I have to hard reset my computer, this seems to only happen when I am using 6970 specs with the +20 power.

Thanks guys!

Quick question: what resolution/graphics settings have you be running BF3 with?

Are they unlocked or are they bios flashed? there is a difference

you want to unlock the shaders only, but not flash the bios. unlocked and with standard 6950 bios you can go ahead and just oc them up to 6970 speeds and beyond

from my experience the vertical bars hard lock is an unstable overclock issue. put the cards down to stock clocks and see if it improves, then you know what the problem is. if it continues then look at memory, the vertical bars crash is something i see with memory clocked too far also

@Whippy

I flashed the bios to the 6970 bios. I am glad you have some experience with the issue I am facing. I have the clocks set at standard 6970 settings. The card never gives me that issue when playing any games. Only when playing games and watching a video on youtube or windows media player.

You can try Afterburner as it is an easy way to manually set the clocks and the voltage so you know exactly what the card is doing. Most 6950 should do the 6970 clocks 880/1375 without trouble on stock voltage.

Problems i have heard is to do with the memory chips on the 6950 not being quite as good as the 6970 ones. How much truth to that i dont know. So its usually recommended to flash only to unlock the shaders, and just do a manual overclock rather than the full 6970 bios. If you have your original saved bios, you could put it back on with RBEdit, then unlock the shaders again. After that go overclocking.

Should be able to push around 900/1400 with little to no voltage bump. As you go higher you will need to keep adding voltage. 920-950 is what i have clocked on a couple of cards with around 1175-1185 voltage. You can go up to 1.2 and a bit more if temps dont go too high, but ive found voltage this high doesnt help a great with the clocks on air anyway.

And as above, i would have thought you could get more than 30fps with 1 card anyway. Except the shaders must be unlocked if you definitely have the 6970 bios. Get GPUz and it will tell you
