HTPC: Mobo, CPU recommendations

Thread Starter
Hello,

I recently been reading HTPC guides but I am still confused and couldn't make a decision on what parts to get.

I'm looking for a good MATX motherboard that would have available slots for a discreet GPU AND a TV tuner(for hulu and netflix). Also a CPU that is good enough to play "ripped" 1080p blu-ray with a GPU like HD 5450 or HD 6450.

My budget is around $200-$300 for the Mobo, CPU and RAM. I was considering getting a I3-2100 and a compatible motherboard but there were too many choices I don't know where to start.

Any suggestions and recommendations would be appreciated.

Very Respectfully,
roskof

If this is purely HTPC (no games, no folding, etc.), I'd get: Grand total: $185.97
Total after rebates and combo deals: $165.97

Oh wow, that combo is what's actually in my cart at the moment, except for the GPU, I had HD 6450 instead. Is 6450 overkill for pure HTPC?

Thanks!

From what I understand, they're the exact same card, so just get whichever is cheaper. cool.gif

Have you consider the AMD Fusion? Try this:

AMD A8-3850 $140

Asrock A75M FM1 motherboard $75

Some 8gig memory kit for about $40

About $255 for a Quad core CPU, mATX board with Sata6 and USB3.0, and an equivlent HD6550, with 400shader processors. Free up you PCIe for a tuner card.

Yes this will probably draw more wattage than the suggested Intel build, but that's something you'll have to weigh in yourself, on how much wattage to power you want.

+1. Also its not really much more power considering you don't need to use a separate video card.

+1, thanks for this, I have never thought of going this route. Do you think this would draw more wattage on idle than G620+6450?

It'll probably draw a bit more wattage. Assuming this is HTPC you are not pushing CPU like games or Prime95. It'll probably be like 10W to 15W of difference.
