Windows 7 OS advice needed.

Thread Starter
Hi all. been a while. I am in UK. I need some help with my Windows 7 OS. it used to work fine until i replaced my frazzled MoBo. it seems to have been since that time or thereabouts that i now keep receiving messages/pop-ups telling me that my OS is not genuine. this also causes my browser (FireFox) and my email (MS-Outlook) to freeze.
I can't find the disk we reinstalled the OS from but i know it had a license, just that now i can't check it or get it verified etc. I remember going through this once before, about 3 PC's ago and one phone call to Microsoft got it sorted.
anyway, it now seems that i need a completely new OS and i am assuming i wont be able to upgrade from where i am now but will have to start from scratch, quite annoying as it's not cheap!.
What i need is to be able to choose the right OS for as cheap as possible. there are so many options out there it's mind boggling.
can anyone advise me?

Russell.

Did you purchase an OEM version of Windows 7? If so you are screwed, if you purchased the full retail you can just reactivate your copy of windows.

as i said above, i can't find the disk so i can't check the licence, it might be that we didn't install the same version OS that was on the previous MoBo, as we have several PC's in the house. I can't remember what we used.
I am assuming i can't 'upgrade' from this one as it isn't genuine. ?

i keep getting a pop-up that asks me to download 'WindowsActivationUpdate.exe' which will check the validity of my OS. I am a little worried that if i do that it might stop my PC working all to gether even though it says it 'might' fix any errors.

what should i do ?

I don't think you need to be a student to buy from there.

I know some people who bought from there and they weren't students.

Also go to Microsoft Validation if you want to try and activate your copy.

If not Microsoft will sort it out for you if you give them a call.

Download that link is near the bottom open it and it will show your product key

OEM versions of Windows 7 are bound to the hardware in their EULA.
If you changed anything else, it would've been ok, but the motherboard is what W7 checks to see it's on the "correct" computer. So it deactivated itself.
See if you can phone MS for help, and if they agree to help (highly unlikely) renew your product key

I read somewhere that if your motherboard fails they say that you get a motherboard of exact make and model failing that you should get one of equivalent specs.
I think you can phone up and they should transfer it for you if you explain

this is completely doing my head in now. when my motherboard died IN WARRANTY shouldn't the supplier have given me a new OS seeing as i definately needed one? they would have known about it but never said anything about OEM licensing.
I am looking for a new version to buy, but can only find OEM ones (1PC) for sale for about £70. what is a NOT OEM version? how many times do you get to reinstall those one? after all my MoBo could expire again at any time.
I will also need a new version of MS Office 2007, another £100. all because the mobo died !!!
i need some serious guidance here to avoid spending too much if i don't need to. any help appreciated.

Russell.
