Overclocking Hurts Performance O.o - Page 2

So it turns out I'm a moron, the RAM I use (mushkin redline 996746 DDR3 1600 7-7-7-18 1.65v) is for Intel i5/i7 and doesn't like AMD. So I up'd the voltage to 1.645v and manually set the timings to 7-7-7-20 (which is what CPU-Z rates them as) and they pass Windows memory diag, altho it doesn't show me any report after... is that competent enuff or do I need memtest86+? Everything is much faster and smoother now. I think I can start OC'ing... from scratch.
Are you stability testing this OC? Probably not stable.

You're right, altho I don't think the ram is overclocked and everything else is stock atm, (actually RAM a little underclocked on the tRAS 20 instead of 18) battlefield 3 is crashing the computer after a couple hours, but everything else runs fine all night. What's the best I can do with this intel ram on my amd rig?
I have loads of icons on my desktop and in folders on my desktop, and at first Windows was smooth to open them quickly - but after a while now, (almost a year maybe? maybe more? and adding more stuff...) Windows is just slow loading the icon cache now.

But if you have relatively few or little icons then maybe your overclock is unstable.

You probably aren't stable, and your memory controller probably can't handle that speed and timings on that RAM. From what I've read, Windows memory test isn't that great. Memtest86+ is your best bet, and make sure you let it run through all 8 tests.
The best I could get my "i5/i7 designed" Mushkins is 1600 8-9-9. From what Mushkin said, I'd need an X6 to be able to handle the lower timings. The IMC on these chips isn't the greatest.

I doubt his memory controller is lacking - though it is a possibility, it's probably related to a number of things including voltage, auto settings. It's possible the RAM isn't compatible but it would be fairly obvious; programs crashing, BSOD, memory management errors.

The IMC's aren't that horrible on either C2/C3 stepping Phenom II's, contrary to popular belief.

umm..yeah..do NOT be afraid to raise your NB voltage..START @ 1.2..and raise more..if needed..that's NB..NOT cpu/nb..that goes up to 1.375..

Can I ask why you're suggesting raising the NB voltage?

That voltage will do little for standard clocks and overclocking in general. It can come in handy with extreme clocking however. (Since back when the IMC was moved off of the NB and into the CPU - there hasn't been much need to raise NB voltages any more)

You have that flipped bro the cpu-nb is what the imc is under.
Your nb is your motherboards chipset.

BSOD's are a normal side effect of finding a stable overclock. Nothing on your system would drastically slow down your OS more than an OC that isn't working Always BIOS overclock, no automatic, it never gets it right, and usually pushes voltages WAY higher then what's needed. Stick with lower frequencies and tighter timings with the Deneb's.
