BF3 and low GPU usage - Page 2

Hello mate, his CPU is holding him back, he will need to overclock to at least 3.9 ghz to maximize the GTX 580's potential. when CPU usage is higher then GPU usage, it means CPU is holding back the calculations therefore causing low usage. Overclock it for him and report back please.

I would try a driver sweep. Can't really hurt to try. Also are you using 285.62 of the BF3 drivers?

Agreed, cpu needs to be overclocked as it's holding the gpu back, which is obvious by looking at the
utilization, just try and see for yourself. I had the same problem when I was using Q6600 back when Crysis came out.

Those Q9650s are good and it will overclock nicely.

I would like to point out that the difference in load between a Radeon HD5830 @ most likely 1280x720-1024 on Birdy's 19" and your bro's 580 @ 1680x1050 is a world of difference. I'm with the others here OC that sucker and it should clear things up.

I've gotten a lot of "junk" about cpu bottleneck and what not as well... But my 285's wont go above 75% in BF3.

I kinda new to sli, I just picked up and extra 285 to get me through till next year's nvidia cards... I don't really see a reason performance wise to upgrade to a 5xx series.

Having that said, I've come across a couple of things myself in my search for answers on the gpu usage...

If using multi-monitors... Hit "windows+P" and select "computer only" before launching a game... Leaving a unused monitor on displaying the desktop will eat gpu cycles like mad. (I couldn't get over 40% usage with my second monitor in use).

Another thing I just played with today, Firefox hardware acceleration. If using Firefox at least (might apply to other browser as well... dont know). I disabled hardware acceleration in Firefox and freed over 180mb of video ram and gained another 5-7% gpu usage in game. (Since we have to keep a browser open for freakin' BattleLog)

Other than that... there are lot of people with the Gpu usage issue. It is seemingly random however. People with 560ti, 460, 260 216's, 570's... and any run of Cpu's... I7's, I5's, core2quads, any amd ... and all at any range of clock...


Other than that... I would still OC that Proc. There really isn't any reason not to in all reality... there is free performance in there as it is.

This is not an accurate assumption if the game isn't coded to use 4 cores equally well. Which very, very few games are.

You can get a cpu-bottleneck with only one core tapped out (which means 25% overall CPU usage on a quad-core CPU) if the game is only coded to use one core. Just to give an example of the phenomenon of which I speak wink.gif

Although it's by *no means* a guarantee, my bet is also on the CPU at stock holding back the performance of this game.

I'll also add that BFBC2 had GPU usage issues for like a year after it came out ... and they're still not totally solved, but have improved greatly w/drivers and patches ...

Based on this review that came out, BF3 is not CPU demanding and increasing the clock speed doesn't help that much.

So any other ideas why the GPU usage is so damn low?

My guess would be a driver issue and maybe his slow DDR2-800 ram of 4GB. We did a clean driver sweep and installed the current Nvidia drivers which didn't help.

He's running a 5830. It takes a lot less to stress that GPU than a 580.

And the Tech Spot/Toms reviews are both running the same pre-determinded cut scenes in single player, imo that doesn't have any relation to what the CPU may experience in multiplayer.

I can play that EXACT single player mission, and still my cards wont go over 75% usage... CPU usage is no where near max... not even on one core.



If I drop everything down to Low quality, GPU usage drops to 50% on both cards.

If I keep the quality and just drop the resolution, GPU usage drops again...

Its almost as if the game has a performance limiter...

I do not think it has any thing to do with the CPU all though a overclock on the CPU would help out. If my CPU and my cards can run it at 30-40FPS then he should be able to run it at, at least 35-50FPS.
