Just use the 9800GTX for reference. Find some other benchmark that compares the 8800GT with it in another graphically-intense game to find out roughly how many fps to drop off of the Tom's result.

great article, my 5970 @1100/1365 on medium runs 120 fps vsync on (have 120hrz monitor) but it does drop to 80/90 at times. And I do have many of the load and change of resolution issues.... but considering the price and when I bought this card almost 2yrs ago ... it's severing me well, games and folds great and will hold me till the 7 series and 2012 intel chips come out or I go green again ... but do love bf3 so far

The thing is, it is using DirectX 10 settings, which not only has visual issues for the time being (they will likely be fixed), but it's also using forced lower settings, so the numbers aren't directly comparable. Of course it isn't worthless though.

There's a few things the review pointed out to keep in mind.

A distinction even has to be made between this single-player experience and what you’re almost certain to see in a multi-player map. I’ve seen benchmarks from the multiplayer beta where there’s more of a hit incurred dropping down a given processor vendor’s stack. What’s most clear there and here, however, is processor performance takes a back seat to graphics potential.

But this sequence is friggin consistent. So, when you compare frame rates, keep relative performance in mind, and not the absolute numbers attained here, which are guaranteed to range both up and down, depending on what you’re doing in Battlefield 3.
Also, that dual core CPU has Hyper-threading, which, when the game may make use of it, can seemingly do near miracles. They did show a Bulldozer with two cores to offer a potential glimpse of what I'm about to ask, but I'd like to have seen a Core 2 Duo and/or Phenom II X2 ran through it too.

I'd say the difference between the GeForce 9800 GTX and the GeForce GTS 250 would be similar-ish to the difference between the GeForce 8800 GT and GeForce 9800 GTX, plus or minus.

The regular GeForce 9800 GTX was just a rebranded GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB anyway (which itself was just a GeForce 8800 GT with higher clocks and a few more shaders), no?
It was done by another site with an X2 Phenom with near 100% usage.

Core 2 Duo not only doesnt have hyper threading versus the i3 it only does 3 instructions per clock versus 4.

I really have to say.... I play this game completely maxed out 1080p smooth as butter with my sig rig. My GTX 470 eats it for lunch and still has horsepower to spare as I knew it would. I still laugh at all the people who went out and bought a $500 GPU so they could "run BF3".

It depends on your resolution...
They might be playing with 3 monitors, you never know.

Depends on what different people consider "smooth as butter".
I for one would drop the graphical settings to get minimums of 50, rather than running everything @max and having minimums of 30-40.

Honestly I can't tell the difference from 40FPS to 60FPS, and I seriously doubt anyone else could. Most console games barely hit 30. I'll have to run fraps to see just what my frame rate is, but there's no slow downs or anything when I play so I'm guessing it's a fluid 40 or a bit more. If I was trying to play on more than 1 monitor, that would be a different story.

Man you only have a 5870. There are a lot of cards better than that. Don't get so arrogant.
