Starting to get close to that magic price: 250GB SSD for $100

Thread Starter
I told myself I would finally get an SSD once I can get a 250GB SSD for $100. Prices keep dropping on these and I am very excited about finally getting an SSD for a desktop once I can get a 250GB SSD for a $100. Maybe another year or so and I can finally get one. Let's Hope!

This is what is stopping me from upgrading.

I've been tempted to do a 128x2 raid 0 or 256gb drive, but I don't NEED the upgrade yet.
If 128gb was $50, I'd just buy 4, raid them, and be done with it.

256gb still runs well over the $300 mark (maybe black friday will bring us a deal?!), so for the cost to drop by 1/3, we'll see. I doubt you'd see that drop in 3 months unless someone introduces a super cheap tech and simply beats OCZ at the "I'm the cheapest SSD" game.

I payed $380 back in 2009 for an OCZ agility 120gb. I bought a 256gb for the same price either earlier this year or end of last year. That's a heck of an improvement, but it was still 3 years to cut the price in half...

With HDD pricing increasing, there will be more demand of SSDs, or at least people considering finally moving to them. I can't see increase demand lowering SSD prices at all. Hopefully, we don't see stagnation in price drops, but SSDs just don't flucutate in prices like ram does every generation.

The price drops you are seeing is because of the failure of the new SandForce MLC chip in these newer SSDs. There have been so many issues and recalls of SSDs w that controller and that leaves us a glut of aged inventory mixed with new driving prices down; TEMPORARILY!

Hopefully, at least with this terrible economy and all, maybe they will keep dropping like they've been.

Ya they should keep dropping a lot I mean SSD's are becoming more "mainstream" than not these days. I ended up buying a Crucial M4 and I LOVE IT.

But hopefully this time next year I can get 500Gb's for around 200 bucks or maybe a bit more because I'd love to replace my mechanical hard drive biggrin.gif

I would be happy to see the M4 256GB at the $300 price point by black Friday. I would regret it by next year, but I doubt I would need more Storage by then.

I have 7 games, a bunch of office programs, a few benchmarks and some other random stuff installed on my 256gb Samsung 470. I have 121gb free of 238gb.

I only was able to get it like this by disabling the page file and roll back. I have 16gb of ram, so I never run out of ram (It's never topped 7gb of usage).

You can fine 256gb M4 drives on ebay nearing the $300 price point, but it's ebay, lol.

The more I read, the more I'll wait. I think I'll just wait for better read IOPs, maybe 100K?! At some point, there must be diminishing returns...
