[Tech Spot] Battlefield 3 GPU & CPU Performance

Earlier this month we checked out the beta version of Battlefield 3 to see how it played on a range of DirectX 11 graphics cards. The results were concerning as even the latest and greatest graphics cards struggled, especially those who planned to enjoy the game in all of its visual glory.

Powerful single-GPU cards like the GeForce GTX 580 and Radeon HD 6970 failed to average 60fps using the high quality settings with MSAA disabled at 1920x1200. The 'Ultra' quality settings reduced frame rates to around 40fps.

Looks like AMD needs to optimize their drivers for BF3 further still. Enjoy!

i was more surprised with how low the CPU usage was on the fx-8150.

Again the 570 trumps on the 6970 when the settings are cranked up.... I just don't get it. At 1600p I would never predict a stock 570 beating a stock 6970, especially not on ultra. I really wish reviewers would put out a comprehensive test list for the 2.5GB 570, as I think it'd be untouchable by AMD's current lineup.

Me too to a degree. It was substantially higher than a 2600k however. The article brought up an interesting point about how the single player portion of BF3 is not nearly as demanding as other recently released titles such as deus ex human rev.

I want that A8-3850 just to play with.

Its definitely an issue with MSAA with AMD cards. Turning this on makes performance plummet.with it off AMDs offerings are equal to or slightly faster than nvidias cards.

I really really really hope this can be corrected with a driver release.

Good to see dual cores doing very well in this game.

Nvidia didn’t bother to compare their products to AMD’s when putting together their reviewers guide. AMD, on the other hand, included extensive testing putting products from both companies head to head. That testing cast the Radeon series in a good light, however we found it odd that in virtually every test AMD used the Ultra settings but with MSAA completely disabled.

When we started testing on our own it became apparent why AMD did this. With MSAA enabled the performance sharply declines with Radeon boards and previous generation Nvidia products make AMD’s current generation hardware look foolish. However disabling MSAA allows AMD to catch up to Nvidia, as you saw in our High quality 1680x1050, 1920x1200 and 2560x1600 tests.

That's quite sad.

Why does the 580 show only a 3 fps advantage compared to the 570? Basically people who spent money on 580's wasted their money instead of getting 570's since they could not increase IQ settings. (Edit: Compared with Tom's review, 580 gets more performance than 570 by a good margin. I wonder why Techspot's review showed a different story even though both Tom's and Techspot used the same Going Hunting scene.)

I wonder what the performance would be if they turned off HBAO. A lot of people turn off HBAO since it is a performance killer.

I can tell you that with "high settings" and HBAO off, I get tremendous frames on my GTX 460. Most people probably won't notice the difference between HBAO on or off.
