[CBC] Rogers violating internet rules, CRTC says

Rogers admitted in March that its network systems were unintentionally slowing down, or “throttling,” internet traffic for the game World of Warcraft, then said it had resolved the problem.

It further acknowledged in September that other games and programs might be getting tripped up by its throttling. The Canadian Gamers Organization's complaint detailed slow internet speeds experienced while playing Call of Duty: Black Ops.

I know it doesn't matter to many people but it does need to start somewhere, next up is data caps and spying.rolleyes.gif one can dream can't they?
I really think the "fad" of p2p has passed and now it's a tool, time for the ISPs to accept it.

Sorry to do this, but I would love that package.. Way better than what I currently have... I pay $70 a month for 3D/1U....

On topic. About time that somebody is trying to do something about this... There should not be data caps or throttling or spying (unless there is a credible reason..).

I pay that for 10mbps down/1.5mbps up and no cap or throttling.

Then again Florida hasn't jumped on the (on no p2p is bad) bandwagon yet, except for comcast which is universally stupid.

Don't they actually lease the bandwidth from Rogers?

Yes, well, you're not in Canada...

Imho, the problem is mostly the CRTC that doesn't do what it's supposed to do (protecting customers) while still not allowing foreign competition in the telecom market. But I don't want to get more deeply in politics here.

On the subject at hand, I'd say it's about time, 10 months after complaints and 8 since Blizzard basically said Rogers reps had basically no idea what they were talking about.
Quote:
Sadly, that representative seems to be slightly misinformed. This issue has nothing to do with the type or content of WoW traffic, at all. We don't use p2p in game, period. We also use the same registered ports we have been since November of 2009. It is definitely disheartening to see that type of uninformed response, as it indicates that there is a serious disconnect occurring at multiple levels.

We still hold hope that your ISP will be willing to respond to our contact requests. We have sent numerous emails over the past few months, and I regret to inform you that I haven't seen a reply come back yet. Our network engineers are still politely requesting an open dialog so that we can assist your ISP with information specific to our network traffic that may help them properly configure their traffic management systems and end this issue. I still hold hope that they may reply at some point in the future.

They lease the last mile infrastructure, but have their own routers, etc.
