[eweek] Freak accident exploding laptop dvd drive impales a mans hand - Page 11

The ability to shatter a microwaved and acid damaged CD with a power hand tool attached to a work bench with a broken CD tray nailed to it has NOTHING to do with the feasibility of an actual working DVD Drive shooting a steel rod through someones hand... Just saying.

I think it depends.

I've broken bones in both my hands clean through without any consequences. My friend lost 3 fingers and had bones fused in his right hand and he still writes, bowls, plays video games, etc.

I'd like someone to explain to me how he won't be able to fish with a fused bone in the center of his hand.

You cant make a assumption off of 1 person(your friend) and apply it to everyone. Doesn't work like that.

I was just giving an example (2 in fact) of hand injuries that did not result in debilitation such as not being able to write. Just because you have a hand injury doesn't mean you won't be able to do things. I used my friend because his injury is grossly more severe than the one in the article and mine because they are first hand accounts.

The only thing that is going to keep him off a golf course is himself.

There are many people in the world with worse disabilities who still manage fine. Loosing some function in your hand does not instantly mean that you are unable to do something, only that it may be harder and requires extra effort.

If you want more annecdotal evidence, I have a friend with only one arm who still does everything she wants too including climbing, canoeing, riding a bike, x-country skiing and even, on occasion, fishing.

If you want even more good examples, watch the paralympics.
