FREE SERVER! What Do You All Think?

Thread Starter
So a friend of mine (works for as head of the IT branch for multiple hospitals...lucky son of a....) and he has over the years gotten free stuff when the hospital upgrades their current things. Well he recently bought himself a small server for home use but only sued it for about a week before the hospital was throwing out a series of servers because they just got new ones and he was able to take them for free! (again lucky...)

But the server he bought for his own personal use he has no use for anymore, so he is giving it to me! Its this server:http://www.pacificgeek.com/product.a...1&C=284&S=1972

now my question is...what do you all think? pretty decent machine right? I would really only be using it to replace my current home server setup. Throw Windows Server 2008 on there and have a nice little server. I was excited because it uses SATA so i just use my current drives. Not to bad of a machine right? What do you think i could do with it?

it is a decent machine, mainly because it's free!! it could be ten years old, free still is almost always better than stuff you have to pay for

Based on the clock rate I'm assuming those are Netburst-based Xeons, so it's actually not that powerful. My dev server at work has a pair of dual-core 3.4 GHz Netburst Xeons with HyperThreading for a total of eight threads, and it's on par with a good Core 2 Duo on CPU performance.

Still, you can't beat getting it for free!

Yes, Nocona Xeons are pretty much 90nm Prescott P4's with dual QPI.

P4's aren't thad bad tho. I got a 130nm Northy P4 with HT @ 3 GHz, and with a Radeon 9200 w/128 MB VRAM i could play many games, altough in low/mid detail. Would work well as a data server, basic internet PC, or backup rig. With 2x Xeons, you could make it an HTPC with a cheap but good video card.

But the best thing of all...

I hope you have a good place to put it. In case you've never heard a 1U server before, they are very loud.

I would play with but would not use it for anything serious. That CPU themselves will use something like 200-300w. A single 65w Athlon II X2 will outperform it.
Once again...

^^ This. I bought a Dell 1850 1U recently and it is AMAZING how loud it can be. I have to put mine in a closet and I can still hear it through the walls when it really spins up.

yea i was thinking just about using it as a data rig for my house, nothing really fancy or special. Not gonna be playing any games on it...thats what i have my Sig Rig for .

I heard the 1U servers are like a small prop plane taking off so not sure where im gonna put this thing...i would dump it off in the garage but the garage is like 150 yards away from the house and i dont have cables run for it...so....im gonna try it in my computer room, im probably gonna regret it...lol
