Looking for a $50-$60 replacement for my 212+

Thread Starter
My 212+ can hardly keep my PHII from over heating @ 3.89Ghz 1.45v (my chip has run very hot, 62C under load with stock fan even at stock speed) Is the 212+ still the price king? What is a good upgrade for the price I mentioned? I'm looking around newegg but im unsure of what will solve this thermal issue

noctua nh-d14 is around 80 but is top end for air cooling. save that, go for corsair h60 or antec kuhler 620 for entry level pre-assembled water cooling (those are both around $60)

my noctua nh-u12p does a good job on my ph. II 940. keeps load temps in the 40s when playing BF3 on high settings at 3.6 ghz, 1.4375v

you should probably just wait until you have 80-90 bucks or buy a used NH-D14. Nothing much better than the hyper 212 in the 50-60 range.

in the reviews ive read of the havik, it performed just about the same if not a few degrees hotter than the d14.

Cooler master V6GT performs like H60/620/U12P SE2 and V6 GT Costs 47$
Corsair A70 is 3°C more hot than V6GT and costs 37°C
CM hyper 212 Evo is 3°C cooler than 212+ and costs 35$

Get a Scythe Mygen 2 Rev. B

It kept my X4 B55 @ 4.4GHz @ 1.5125v at around 48C and I had 2 Scythe Slipstream push/pull fans running at 900 RPM.

How is your 955 running so hot?

I run my 555 in x4 @ 4.01ghz with 1.42v

I dont pass 52C on full load.

I'd bet the airflow in your case isn't so great or your ambient temps are high.

I really don't know my ambient is only 21C on average, I have two 140MM fans pulling air in the front, two 140mm exhausting at the top, one 120 exhausting out the back, and a 140MM pulling in fresh from the side panel. With the stuck cooler at stock speeds it was over 60C at load, I re-seated it at least 3 times (using different TIM every time) and no change. The 212+ brought my temps to 32C idle with 58C under load. Disappoint.jpg

+1 for the Noctua U12p. Used it in my bro's build on a i7 960. Worked very well. And the fans are just great and quiet as hell
