Worth upgrading 955BE - 1090TBE

Thread Starter
I just bought a new mobo so I can SLi my 460's. Now I am looking at new ram and a bigger PSU. Would it be worth it to pick up an X6? My 955BE doesn't clock exceptionally well, the frequency wall is 3.8Ghz (needs .2 more volts to hit 3.9Ghz lol) I know Thuban chips clock better than Deneb, with okay cooling could I overclock the 1090T enough to make it worth the upgrade?

Thanks

Do you realize the 990X/FX chipsets support SLI? I'd return your board or cancel your order and grab this board instead, if you're willing and/or able to do so.

Regarding your question, I'd say only if you buy a used 1090T. I don't really know how much they go for, but spending $160 on a new 1090T seems excessive this late in the game.

If you are overclocking the 955 on the mobo in your sig rig, then that might be the problem. A lower end mobo like that can limit overclocking and jumping to a 1090T might have the same result. My suggestion is to get a 990FX based motherboard and keep the 955.

I'll agree with this, but I suggest you go with this board instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128514

As to the 1090t, it isn't really worth it unless you are doing heavily multi-threaded tasks like rendering or folding, I would just hold onto your 955 if I were you.

You going to upgrade to bulldozer later on? If not get a crosshair iv formula and save some money.

The crosshair iv formula doesn't support SLI, he'd have to use the SLI hack on it.

man I derped hard on that one. I can't believe I forgot about the new boards. Canceled my order in the nick of time, frankly I have NO plants to upgrade to BD but im hoping a good quality 990FX board will help me get my 955BE to 4ghz. The FXA-UD3 looks like a boss, might need to get that but im not jumping the gun again lol. Thanks for the epic save

I have the asus m5a99x which supports SLI and i oc my 955b3 with a hyper 212 to 4.2 ghz with max temp on prime 95 being 55. Really good board for the money right now. your video cards will not be bottlenecked by the x8 sli either.

Yeah, unless the OP has a specific multi-threaded task in mind, then it's probably not worth it. It would be more of a side-grade than an upgrade.
