I agree. My HX650 is so quite I had to look it over when I first put it in to make sure the fan was working.

They're not similar, they don't use the same fan and/or controller, not even the same OEM

A standard BIOS GTX 580 will never pass ~320W due to power throttling, and that's in furmark, in gaming won't even get close to that.

@ OP, you don't need an 850W PSU, nvm the ridiculos HX1050 suggestion.. that's enough to run 4x 6950 in CFX on a SandyB platform

Where are you buying from and what is your budget?
I'm in the UK so got a wide choice of etailers, budget is between the tx 850 and the ax 850 so between £100 to £150, with the hx 850 sitting in the middle at £125.

If you are looking for good quality and want to pay slighly less, you might want to look for one of these:
Huntkey x7 900W
Lepa g900 (Enermax 87+)
Thermaltake Toughpower XT 775/875W (CWT DSG)
XFX Black edition(in some countries its called xxx edition) 850W (Seasonic M12D)
Super flower golden green mod 800 or 1000W (dont think they have 900)

Since your budget allows it, Corsair AX 650 or AX 750(if you plan to unlock the cards into 6970s), the 850W is pointless and a waste.
Other excellent, cheaper options would be the Antec TPN 650/750, Thermaltake 675/775 and the Silverstion Strider Plus 750(which is also fully modular) but none of them are as silent as the AX.

My card's already unlocked and I bench at 970/1450, cpu gets benched at 5Ghz+ and I have run sli, so the 850w is probably the minimum to be on the safe side. I was looking at the thermaltake xt 875 but the 7 year warranty on the corsair is also quite appealing. The silance is key though as I have just setup my waterloop to include the cpu and gpu and the only noise I hear now is the psu.

2600K @ 5Ghz and one 6970 @ 0.97Ghz and you think 850W is the minimum needed to be on the safe side!?.. how much power do you think your hardware draws in the most common scenarios?.. benching/gaming/multitasking?

If the noise is your main concern then you need to go Seasonic X/Corsair AX, Super Flower Golden Green(or rebrands like NZXT Hale) or Cougar GX/SX.

I'm not worried about the most common scenarios as that's not when the most power gets used. Anyway let's not drift too far off topic.

Thanks for the suggestions on the quieter psu's, have heard about the super flower recently will check that out too.
