Best upgrade choice

I have been interested in upgrading my soundcard from the onboard audio for christmas. Only problem is I have a very compact micro-ATX case and don't have room for any more expansion cards.

I have been looking into external soundcards/DACs and I think I have it narrowed down. I have been looking at the fiio e10 and the Creative X-fi HD usb. I'm not sure how they compare to each other sound quality wise, but feature wise the X-fi HD has mic-in for my zalman clip on mic. What I see is two options.

1. Use X-fi HD with headphones, speakers and mic
2. Use fiio e10 with headphones, speakers, and plug mic into onboard audio.

Which option would be better in the long run? Also are there any other external solutions that would be better in this price range? (80 - 100)

Can't speak for the Fiio e10 as it hasn't even come out yet (shipping Early November), but I'd assume it'd be better than the USB Titanium HD.

From what I've heard the Titanium HD USB version is a huge disappointment and the internal card version is infinitely better.

You could probably look into buying a Zero DAC for 106 dollars used from Head-fi.

The E10 isn't far off from the Audinst HUD-MX1 so i would say not a bad choice for the $$

That is a very hopeful review of the e10. I actually hope it's as good as they're saying. Would be excellent to have a cheap USB DAC that sounded that good for 80 dollars. Looks like the built in amp isn't too bad neither. The e11 looks like trash though.

I am currently using JVC HA-RX700 headphones and a 2.1 set of logitech speakers I got for less than $50. I do plan on upgrading my equipment once I have more space/money but I'm saving those decisions till later. I want a good DAC that I can use for any foreseeable upgrades to my computer setup.

I'm also wondering if I do go with the e10 is it still possible to use the onboard mic input when the e10 is plugged in. I don't use the mic for anything important so high quality there isn't necessary.

I also looked into that zero dac and while it looks very good, I don't really have much room on my desk for a large desktop dac.
