Backup DirecTV HD DVR Shows to Computer?

post #1 of 5
Thread Starter
Hello OCN,
I would like to backup my HD / SD Shows from my DVR directly from DirecTV.
From a few articles I have read, I have seen that I would need a PVR to do what I wanted, because of the encrypted signals directly from a DirecTV satellite.
I think the layout should be:

Satellite-> Coaxial -> DirecTV DVR/Box -> HDMI -> PVR -> TV/Computer

If you have any suggestions on PVR or alternative methods, feel free to list them. And, of course thanks very much for the help! (I've heard Hauppauge company has a good PVR product)

HDMI signal from the Directv dvr/box might be encrypted. I don't know, since i do not have directv. if that's the case, you could try component connections.

If you want them on your computer your best bet is to get something like the Hauppauge HD-PVR (external USB) or Colossus (internal PCIe). Both have component input. Your receiver's HDMI output is almostly certainly encrypted with HDCP. As for software, Windows Media Center always works and there are many other TV recording software packages you can try.

You want to use component instead of HDMI, because HDMI is encrypted and PVR does not record encrypted content.

Thanks for the replies! I was doing some more research and took your replies into consideration. I agree with the component cables, as that HDCP thing. So, I think I may get a dazzle/pinnacle. My folks want to get the shows off before we upgrade the DVR (its not working correctly) . Thanks for the feed back
