What do you think of LLC?

I'm really starting to wonder what the point of LLC is. If I'm understanding correctly, it basically compensates for vdroop by upping the voltage when the CPU is under load.

However, with LLC on, I notice that voltage isn't as "solid." In other words, it strays quite a bit. I realize that I can tone down LLC, but then I start to wonder, why use it at all?

If vdroop is causing instability under load, I'll just raise the vcore to where it's stable. I don't feel like I want the motherboard to make voltage decisions for me, particularly when I see automatic overclocking features throwing obscene voltages for mild overclocks.

I figure I'd run my logic by the forum and see if I'm missing something. I just feel like I'll have better control with LLC disabled.

TL;DR: Does LLC really have much of... well... a purpose for enthusiasts like us?

Which LLC setting are you using? Generally, High and Ultra high are the two best settings for our P8P67 boards. Some people are finding High to be the better choice while others are finding Ultra High to be the better choice. Experimentation is necessary.

That "raising the vcore" when its causing instability might put you over the safe limits so LLC will help you there.

Setup correctly and carefully it lessens the range of fluctuation of you voltage.

Let's say you need 1.5vcore for a certain clock. without llc lets says you need 1.7vcore(idle) so at load(vdroop) takes it down to 1.5vcore your stable
But what id the safe voltages for the certain chip is 1.6?
With llc you wont need to set you voltage too high to make-up for the vdroop.

Kind-off exagerated but you get the picture.

When I have voltage set at 1.27, and that same software tells me that I'm at 1.3 under load, isn't that LLC boosting the voltage above what I told it to?

I guess this is a better question:
In that (ASUS Probe) software, am I seeing what voltage the motherboard is trying to produce, or the post v-droop voltages?

That is very well possible. Like in my setup. LLC brings my voltages over my actual set vcore.
But my settings are quite aggresive to achieve 5ghz, thats why.

With the P8P67 boards, an LLC of Extreme causes vRise. Ultra High almost eliminates vDroop entirely. High allows for a little bit of vDroop, but it results in the best voltage stability.

I don't think it's on extreme, I think I have it set on High, I'll have to double check when I get home.

But that doesn't explain the voltage gains. When I set a voltage, I'd like that to be the max voltage I ever see the chip get. With this LLC stuff, should I be tuning the voltage for low-load and just let the LLC compensate for the rising load of the CPU?

What you have said so far tells me that you are getting vRise which is almost always caused by using an LLC of Extreme.

However, if High is causing vRise for you, then use Medium.

Okay, so do we know if the voltage the motherboard is displaying in BIOS and software is it's intended voltage, or it's true voltage?

ie. If it displays 1.3v for vcore, is the chip seeing 1.3v, or is it actually seeing 1.25v due to vdroop?
