Help Me Spend Money

So here's my conundrum. I bought a GTX570 and it was probably broken from the get go, but i didn't try gaming with it for a while after i installed it.

i bought it because my 6950 was doing the second monitor stutter thing and it's really annoying.

so returning the card will get me around $330 at microcenter (twin cities location since they have online inventory) and i'm looking on recommendations on what to buy.

here are my opinions so far:

i'm worried about buying another graphics card because i'm not in tune with the current cycle and i don't know if there's a huge step up from my 6950 that's reasonable and won't be beat soon.

i tried an SSD and it lasted two weeks. short enough time that i hadn't set an automatic backup and long enough that i lost data that i was pissed about losing. my own fault, but seriously it should not be that unstable. it's the first hard drive i've ever owned that has crashed.

i upgraded memory recently so i think i'm good on that.

everything in my sig should be up to date.

i look forward to hearing from you guys.

Crucial M4 SSD.

Won't be disappointed.

That, or snag another 6950 for Crossfire.

2 questions:

does crossfire fix the second monitor issue for the 6950s?

what kind of boost am i looking at for my 1920x1080 monitor by going crossfire since, because of tearing, i vsync every game i play?

Well it probably wouldn't fix the second monitor issue, but you can run 1 monitor on each card if you wanted to. Or use the new 6950 to run both the monitors and just love the power of the 2 cards vs 1.

And you'll be looking at a pretty nice performance boost. Not to mention these cards scale really well, and to top it all off, you won't need to upgrade your PSU! Also, they released the new CAP4 drivers for the AMD GPU's and I've only heard good things about them.

Graphs and such.

A little over a 50% increase in performance speaking from benchmarks.

i guess i'll have to max out BF3 and see how it goes before i buy another 6950. i just thought crossfire was more geared to sharper displays or multi-displays that are one giant display.

What is this second monitor stuttering issue? I ran a Hp ZR30W and ZR24W off my HD 6950 and never noticed any stuttering issues. Granted though, I was just using the 30" for gaming and the other monitor was, well secondary.

Crossfire is meant for larger resolutions.. Triple-Monitor setups, giant displays OR single monitor performance.

But you asked what the performance would be like at 1920x1080 and that;s what I was aiming for.

when you overclock a 6950 it drops the idle clocks so low that it can't support dual monitors causing your secondary monitor to flicker sometimes, but doesn't affect performance in any way.

it's a weird problem that i haven't always had, but once it started it hasn't stopped and if you google it you'll find a lot of stories.
