The way offset works is it lowers your idle voltage (Which should be combined with the power saving options like speedstepping, etc, etc).

So when you're @ idle and clocking only 1600mhz, you won't have the massive 1.40v or whatever your vcore is flowing through your cpu. It would drop to somewhere around .9v - 1.1v depending on your offset value.

Then as soon as the cpu detects "MOAR SPEED NEEDED" which is basically almost any task, it'll bump up to your overclock speed and kick in your "normal" vcore.

Edit: I think it is silly to stress test with Prime 95 and Intel Burn test. You put a lot more stress and heat through your CPU than you ever would just using Windows and gaming. People that run IBT for days at a time I think are doing more harm than good.

I just use Windows and play games and incrementally increase the voltage until everything is stable and doesn't crash. All the while, the CPU temps are much lower than using something like IBT. Even a CPU limited heavy use game, the temps won't get near anything like IBT.

It's just like burning in your GPU with something like Furmark, something that is completely unnecessary and doesn't replicate real world use.
I just run the Prime95 blend. It only brings my CPU temps up to 65C max. It also gets me into cool clubs

This is what I have been going by for the last few months and what I usually recommend:


****Max Safe Voltage and Temps****


Before I go into this, I just want to say that this is my OWN opinion and take it as you will.

No one is absolutely certain of what the safe vcore is for the sandybridge chips. What I can tell you is that many say the max safe vcore for these chips are 1.3 region, however, intel states that the max 'VID' is 1.52 and many say that around 1.4 if your on air and 1.45 should be the max if your running water cooling. Personally I will not go above 1.5v for 24/7 with these chip but that is totally upto you. The main thing to understand is that 'YOU' have to come up with the conclusion of what the max is. That way no one is blamed if the chip degrades (none reported so far, even with so called 'high 1.4+ vcore')

Those that have killed or degraded their cpu's have done so through either by their own fault, running sucide runs with crazy voltages and by not having substantial cooling for their overclocks and voltage or for reasons like their mobo or PSU causing shorting and also BIOS bugs.

Please remember that not all chips are the same, some can do high overclocks with low voltage some cannot as you can see in this this thread and many others.

Regarding temps, CPU throttles at 95c, some say keeping it below 85c is good, some say keeping it below 80 is better, other's say below 75c is really good and there are quite a few that say 70c should be the max. Which ever one your comfortable with and if you have substantial cooling, YOU DECIDE YOUR MAX, just remember it throttles at 95c. If for example you hit 85c in stress testing then in everday usage it shouldn't be higher than 75c which I think is fine, I personally like to keep mine below 70/75c during general everyday usage

Here are the reasons I have seen regarding why some people aren't using Offset even though they are at a point where they should make the switch:
  • Honest ignorance. This is where I started; I just didn't know any better.
  • Old-school mindset. This is where I started too which resulted in Honest Ignorance.
  • Some don't know how to set an Offset voltage
  • Some know all about it including why some of us think it's better to use it, but they use this logic: "I just want to see my core voltage and clock speed at maximum 24/7"

I think I'm forgetting some, but still: I think the reason why anyone is not using Offset can be summed up by saying that they're just innocently ignorant. They're not dumb or stupid, but it's just that they haven't had someone come along yet and explain it to them.

Chip survived just fine, and still clocked nicely. 1.65 is probably where it starts to get flaky

So the difference between these 4 numbers (the two VIDs and the two voltages) is 0.0359/0.0309 and 0.0439/0.0389. My Offset ended up needing to be +0.040V to achieve the voltage I want, but someone else with an identical system may end up needing +0.035V or +0.045V.

So yeah, that's basically it.

If you lower the LLC to High, then the Offset will need to be adjusted a bit to compensate. If the LLC is raised to Extreme, then of course the Offset will need to be adjusted the other way.

Thank you for posting this guide about offset voltages TwoCables.

For me personally I haven't tried using offset vcore for both reason 1 and 2. I am still trying to wrap my head around all of this new stuff, and my last build was on socket 775 so a lot of this stuff is new for me.

I have a quick question about offset voltages. When an overclock is stable with a manual voltage does that mean it will be stable with an offset voltage that has the vcore rise to the same voltage?

I'm going to go play with offset voltage. I believe that I have 4.9Ghz stable with ~1.392 -~1.408. With my motherboard I have the manual vcore set to 1.385v + auto extra turbo voltage. It seems that the extra turbo voltage is a different type of vcore offset that works with manual vcore settings.

What do you think is better to use? A lower manual voltage with the extra turbo voltage option, or offset vcore? I'll have to do some more research on this.

Do all motherboards even have an off-set voltage adjustment? I cannot find one in my EUFI, only vcore options are auto and the manual voltage selections and low vdroop or disabled.

For me, I just figured out what I needed to get stable at 4.5 manual and I want to just enjoy my computer for a bit. Ultimate goal is to use my 4.5 manual overclock as a jumping off point for my offset overclock, but I'm going to be lazy for awhile.
