The recomended set up would be -smp 6 and the 2 - 580's.
-smp 7 has been fairly stable for a long while now though... the GROMACS code much have been sorted out since there are so many i7s around now. MOre of an issue with the bigger prime numbers.

Gonna have to disagree with you there Gramps, on a couple of counts.

-smp 7 certainly is not as troublesome as it once was. I don't recall it being an issue around here for a while, and a fair few of our guys are using it.

Plus, v7 currently allows you to enter any number of cores. You might be right in that they might force us to use an even amount of cores, but that's not the case now, so not really an issue.

The problem with the WU's is random and only happens with occasional WU's, v7 does not allow you to choose 7 if you use the slider and the ability to go around the slider is being fixed, it is one of the tickets. You can ask VJ or Kasson in your next DAB get together or post the question over at the FF. The problem is a Gromacs problem and I do not think they know what causes it or how to fix it other than do not allow odd numbers greater than 3. I used -7 for a long time and did not have any problem with using it until about a year ago then I dumped somewhere in the neighbourhood of 20 WU's in a row because of it. When I reported it Kasson responded we were not supposed to use -smp 7. Up untill then I had never heard anything about -smp 7 since then there have been several WU's that will not work with -smp 7.

It is a pretty uncommon occurance now though. As I've said, many of our Folders use -smp 7 (we recommend it a fair bit), and it's not like the forum is filled with complaints about it. I don't believe we should discourage it - and, as a result, -bigadv - because a few SMP WUs don't play nice.
